Interesting and you are correct as far as height, and I was apparently recalling 2e vs 1st, but looking at the two side by side, even though the height may be accurate the scale seems off to me. I wish I still had my old 1st and 2nd ed books, I'd give my left ....well you get the picture.... to have them all still, lol... Then again...looking at this it seems closer than I remembered, but it still looks ...wrong.. to me.... even the dwarf, which I think has gotten to be too big in newer editions, looks very "gnomish" here.... But I do have to admit, I much prefer the Tolkien sizes when it comes to "surface" elves (but i don't usually play them as such), and a 5' tall drow just seems too short...although they say that Triel Baenre was about that size... and just for giggles and info, the size charts for 3rd and 4th editions.... (couldn't find 2e) and Pathfinder.... (all this just for info, not meaning to derail the thread, as I find it interesting.....)

1/72 elves are way too much smaller imho, lol... that puts them at halfling size...but to each their own.
If memory serves, the Elves averaged about 5'4 according to the "Gygaxian" system, but according to the "Tolkien" system they were closer to 6'6". In our D&D games we always viewed High Elves/Eladrin as being the Tolkien type and the wild, wood, grey and drow as being the "Gygaxian" types...
As for the 72mm figs, they are much less common here in the US than elsewhere from what I have seen, but they are quite beautiful figures and seem to be reasonably priced. My only hangups are 1) I already own a crap ton of 28mm figs ans 2) I have enough trouble painting the 28mm figs, smaller ones would be murder.
Very cool thing about the 2.5d dungeons is their versatility and ability to be used for any scale you prefer!

They all sound interesting.....have you tried something on your own yet? Would be really cool to see what you might come up with. Hit up your local craft store and spend an hour wandering around and see what kind of cool things you might stumble across that could be used...Then come back and share with us what you come up with....That would be awesome!

Thanks. What I really would love to do for my cave walls, and will when I finally get my foam cutting tools, is to run foam walls that are about 1/2 to 1 inch in height and have them carved out to look like stone walls. While I love the 2.5 method there are some points where I think it calls for 2.75D (LOL). Features such as steps and stairs have to have a little more depth for me, especially when I am using other 3D elements. It just feels weird when I don't. again thanks everyone for the positive response. I'll be sure to post pics from our game to share with you all!

Exactly what DMScotty says... Give them no other options, and they'll have to just get on with it..... There really is no major difference between moving one 1 inch square and moving 1 inch, other than it eliminates unrealistic restrictions that were put into a game for supposedly simplistic reasons. I.E. it's easy to teach someone a game using boardgame features as those are already familiar to people.
For the life of me I just cannot understand the reluctance of some to think outside the box, or off the grid in this case...

Love what you did with the Temple piece. I am hoping to get my grubby little hands on some foam tools here soon and to start using more foam with my cardboard. So many killer ideas swirling around in my head. Can't wait to see more of your work, and play, in the near future. I love being inspired by what others are doing!

Taking a break to post and share what I have been up to the past couple days. I have been working on the tiles for the first few encounters from the Council of Spiders adventure (encounters module from summer of 2012) as well as re-working and rewriting parts of Keep on the Shadowfell and Thunderspire Labyrinth into drow based adventures. The basic premise being that the players are caught between Orcus and Lolth in a demonic power struggle as well as helping collect artifacts to be sacrificed to the Demon Queen of Spiders so she can spin her "Demon Weave" to replace Mystra's "Spell Weave" and take over and add arcane magic to her portfolio. Most of the changes are "behind the scenes" at this point but it still has an effect on everything that is happening in the adventures. It's going to be interesting to see what choices the party makes and how things play out. Our game is slotted for Wednesday and I should have some pics to post then. Stay safe in the meantime all!

Thanks;) The sewer run was a fun time for all. Sadly they didn't go down that particular side and run into Ringo (the beetle). LOL

Thanks Cryevil. We just finished tonight session, which went pretty well. It was a bit odd though, because several of the players are playing in my 4e session and we all kept reverting to 4e on some of the rules and stuff, lol. I think I am going to have to do some adjusting as this sessions combat seemed much less intense than our recent forays with 4e. For some reason the tension levels were not as high. Here the players are engaging some dire rats, of course the big kitty (the oracle's snow leopard companion) thought someone rang the dinner bell, lol. Sadly she ended up contracting filth fever for her impetuousness. You can also see the Earth elemental that was inadvertently summoned by the party, luckily it was neutral to their presence. Here they have encountered a portion of the dungeons current kobold population, who are merely trying to defend their home. our barbarian was a spinning whirling slaughter house this fight... Here you can see the party wizard looking down the well after a skulk made its escape by jumping in and going down. More to come later Edit: Wanted to point out that the orange dice you see in the pics are the lights from a dancing lights spell that was cast. I really need to get some marbles to use for that, lol....

Reaper also has a couple other versions besides the one you linked above: Bones version of the above. not a bad price at $3 US but not as cool as DMScottys... And the "full" pewter with it's tail:

Very, very nice work. I personally never let an unpainted mini near my table, lol (rule I carried over from playing Warhammer and Warhammer 40k, but I also have a standing offer to paint any minis that my players would like painted as well as I know some people just aren't comfortable doing it.).
I cannot wait to see more as you get them finished.

Those are very nice....and yeah I still consider it crafting I always suck with making doors.....I never get them to be the same size...there always a little off (kinda like me...interesting...maybe that's why) I'm very tempted to take a page from DMScotty's book and go Mageknight with the doors, if I can find a set that's not too expensive... Would be cool to have more options especially if they are inexpensive...

The best way I have found for this is a rather overlooked yet simple one: There are several companies out there that make terrain mats, that come in different types; grass, desert, snow, etc. i use one of those and place objects underneath it to raise it up to create hills and valleys. I have also seen it done with cloth and fabric. Hope this is helpful.....

I have it downloaded, and have read parts of it but between PF and 4e I have too much going atm.... I will end up picking it up on release though.... Very interested in how they spin the changes in the Forgotten Realms (as it's one of my favorites) and if they are gonna bring back Dragonlance or not.

Seriously impressive as usual. I think I'm gonna need to by a crapload of clay here soon. Would have loved to have had some to make the demonflesh wall I needed for my first 4e game I DM'd, would have turned out much cooler than what I ended up doing.... I need to get started on making stalactites, stalagmites and underdark mushroom garden here shortly. thanks for the awesome inspiration T

You desecrat the sanctity of gridless play! You may be using 2.5d, but it is lazy, gridded 2.5d. If this is the future of crafting, I will stay in the past. <sarcasm> Im so sorry if this offends you. </sarcasm> Its not that I prefer one way or another but since my group is so used to grid playing, I decided to go this way. Also there is nothing that really prevents me from playing it gridless with the board. Just ignore the grids and move with a measure. If you have nothing better to say then just keep it to yourself and ignore the post. As for the other comments, thanks for the encouragement... More to come. Great looking work.... As for using tiles with the grids on them, I still use them even if we ignore the fact that the grid is there. No sense in wasting a good tile, map or in this case confuse your players. It's up to each DM to decide which way they want to play their games, and when it comes to crafting we all are here to share ideas and inspiration, not tease, bash or make fun of others artistic skills or lack thereof (in my case). We also have to keep in mind that it is very difficult to convey intent or personality or emotion (particularly humour and sarcasm) in a post on the internet. One may think they are making a joke, but another may take offense at it. We all have enough trolls to throw ar our players in game already, we don't need to have them showing up here. I think your tiles, Ohris, are coming along quite nicely and I also think Ashrothedm's idea has some real merit. It would certainly allow you a way to have your walls be modular without them moving or sliding during games. Can't wait to see how they turn out =)
