For my homebrew my group came across a Knife/Dagger amongst the possessions of a bandit leader they had a violent disagreement with.. When the dwarf found the knife it looked like a bronze/steel poniard of dwarven design, but when he handed it off to the elf to identify its shape changed into that of a slender elven knife.. they rolled terribly on their check so dont know anything further than a blissful 'wtf' about it.. but where their goal is located (somewhere the bandits are encamped) there will be a series of statues depicting duels and general fighting.. but each of the victors seems to've won using nothing.. (This takes place several encounters and short sidequests down the road leading up to the big bad btw).. A mural above depicts the same victors each walking towards and open door similar to that in the room the group are in.
What to be deduced and remembered is the shape changing blade and that each of the battles depicted in the mural should have the blade placed in the hand of the victor in the correct order as a series of race specific switches will release the door locks.
As my first foray into running a game (and relatively new to the game as a whole) i was wondering if any of you may have augments or alterations i could make to make the challenge more interesting?
Cheers

Could the statues be designed such that arms rotate? If so, then some "techniques" or "fighting styles" might warrant more of a stabbing motion--the blade must be placed into the bottom of the fist, not into the top. Maybe the "famous" fighters were right hand vs left hand and they need know which is which. Skills like knowledge ancient history or similar could be a shortcut to those "tricks."

Very cool idea for a puzzle I never would of thought of a shapeshifting knife that changes via race & the up/down, posing, & left vs. right positioning markd1733 added would be a nice touch. I may have to borrow the combined ideas for myself. The only idea I have myself would just simplify the puzzle where a lycanthrope or shapeshifter had to hold the blade while transforming to change the blade into the correct shape then that would just warrant one statue & then it would become a separate puzzle altogether. ;D

Sweet i like it ^^ it'll give me an excuse to abuse some old WH Fantasy figs to make them look like statues... possibly i could make the depict clashing cultures? e.g. european medieval vs Grecian of the same time period, but the statues are out of order and whatnot but they can be moved grid tile style.. the knife then is positioned in the correct wielders hand and locks the statue and the mechanism... could also be an excuse for a few red herrings to be skill checked against Thanks

Again very cool puzzle & the sliding statues idea totally reminds me of something out of the first few Resident Evil games. ;D
