Hello eveyrone! Long time reader, first time post. All of these are from my most recent gaming session with my regular group. The "Mystical Portal" served as the entry to the dungeon: Look familiar? Many of Scotty's techniques and videos went into this piece. Another portal from the "Hub Room" One of the cavern tiles. I have had some challenges with cardboard tiles warping...so I have been working with foam board to see if the warping is any better (it isnt). For the cavern walls this is pink insulation foam and the DM Scotty recomended Foam Factory Cutting tools. Also note the DM Scotty Gelatanous Cube! The Full Tile and a closer shot - complete with Tentacle Monsters made from scupltey: and Complete "Nurgle Room" . The green squares are acid traps. Close up of Nurgle - A GamesWorkShop Mini: My "Idol Room". Lots of foam (altar, rocks. wall). The idol is a Reaper Mini (I think) and being hollow it lit up, unfortunately you cant see that in this pic: The "Lava Room" Compete with Fire Elementals: The "Mirror Room" with a sprung mirror trap (it "duped" my party and forced them to fight themselves...with a few twists): The "Mirror Room" with a glass tile floor: And the final "Crypt Room" : I really can't thank the DM's Craft crew and of course Scotty for all the tips and suggestions. Without you all my games wouldnt be nearly as pretty!

Great stuff! I love the lava room. The mirror room and trap are pretty sweet too.
I think you are getting warping because your tiles are quite large. I use smaller tiles, linking smaller tiles if I need to show a larger area and have very little warping.

Amazing work! I like the result with the mix between the cardboard and the foam (for your walls).
Thank you for sharing.

Great stuff, all of them. Welcome on board! Did you carve/sculpt the fire elementals yourself or is this a commercial mini?

Thanks for the kind comments everyone!
belatucadras - I thought that it might have to do with size originally as well. But I am finding its more to do with the paint. My smallest tile in this set (not pictured) had a bunch of washed out brown to simulate the bottom of a stable. That tile is more warped than even the largest lava room tile. So far, cardboard seems to be better than the foamboard against warping. *shrug* This was only our 9th dungeon in the 2.5 mode and the first foam board dungeon. I think I will revert back to cardboard...cheaper AND it seems to hold its shape better.
Tauster - Those FE are prepainted pathfinder minis if I am not mistaken. I tend to use a lot of prepainted mini for my "grunt" mobs and only really ever paint of make things either 1) dont exist like the tentacles above or 2) sub-boss/boss mobs. I do wish I had time to paint more, I enjoy it and would like to get better but its so time consuming I cant always dedicate the time to it like I would prefer.
Thanks everyone!

Very nice looking tiles. The acid traps look interesting, and the lava room is quite impressive.

That lava room is six loaded cylinders of holy-crap-Mister-GM-man-please-don't-make-me-go-in-there! And the fire elementals coming out look pretty keen, too. The orange highlights on the cavern walls totally sold that room's lighting.
The groovy spiral of that first portal looked like it was moving, and I hope to God you had Dark Side of the Moon playing because it definitely looked trippy.
The second portal made me think Spock or McCoy were going to hop through at any second -- loved it!
Fantastic work, man. Really great!

Very nice looking tiles... man, I got to find a group of people to play with in my area. I see all of the great pieces that are created on this forum and it makes me want to build more and more astuff but with nobody playing they just sit in the box after they are completed.

I see all of the great pieces that are created on this forum and it makes me want to build more and more astuff but with nobody playing they just sit in the box after they are completed. That sucks man. I can kind of feel your pain. While I have a regular group, and its fun, its not all there. I am running a group that consists of my wife, my 17yr old daughter, my 15yr old son, a long time very savy DM friend and his three kids (girl 15, boy17 and young man 21). My buddy has been playing 25+ish years and is an old salt. The wife has some RP chops (she always wanted to play but until she married me 6 years ago, apparently no one would let her play). My son has some real potential, but is a bit of a power gamer/rule lawyer. My daughter is really coming along as well. My buddies kids are fun and there are flashes of brilliance. I can't complain, its a game. And, its just fantastic family time. At the age of my kids, every second I can snag is a gift. They grow too fast. Still though I miss playing with a couple of my old crews. The immersion, and humor and some truly brilliant play. I miss some of those old dungeons and sometimes I even miss some of the old 1st edition cumbersome rules. =) There are alot of options out there for remote gaming. Heck a web cam and Google+ Hangouts you can run a game anywhere with most anyone. If you guys with no games ever want to throw something together, I know the wife and I both would love to have a more adult game. It would be great to play a bit every now and then. I do love being the DM, but its refreshing to sit on the other side of the screen from time to time. There are other options as well. I have looked at roll20.com and that looks hella promising. I have a buddy who plays Pathfinder with some guys all over the coountry on a regular basis and they love it. I am going to have him play with my regular group from time to time. I just set up a laptop and web cam. He can see the tiles and we can see him on the laptop. It actually works really well. Might give it a whirl! Where there is a will...there can be a game. ;-)

You may try applying a coat of spray to the cardboard, either paint or varnish, before applying glue and paint. That may solve your warping problems. I haven't tried it myself, but I think someone mentioned it in a video somewhere. I mostly use styrofoam for my projects, so I haven't had those issues lately, but I know what you mean.

I see all of the great pieces that are created on this forum and it makes me want to build more and more astuff but with nobody playing they just sit in the box after they are completed. My pieces are used for table top play, but one of our players moved to Boston, so we use Skype and a camera to keep him in the game. Don't limit yourself to the table! Since I'm full of ideas today, maybe we should have a Skype-based or forum based game with DM Scotty or the other DMs here running them. So many creative folks here, it seems like the place for quality adventure. All the forum would need is a dice rolling function, and maybe a little moderation over the game threads. I've played and run some play by post games before, so I know it can be done. Anyway, not to derail the post here, the tiles are amazing, and I'm contemplating using foam board for the walls for that clean edge. As for the cavern walls, they look great, so I may be stealing that when I get around to making my cavern tiles.

Hot off the presses! Session just wrapped up a few minutes ago. Tonight was a big night. Funeral for a lost character from last sesson, followed by another PC being reunited by his long lost wife, and then having to kill her to save a daughter he never knew existed. It was a fun session. I knew it would be a big one...and I pulled out a new idea for the main encounter "tile" set. Behold The Temple. Using double layer pink foam, foam cutting tools along with basic painting and some moss...we have the multi playered temple. A close up: The bottom layer: Sadly most of the fight happened on the entry ramp. This is what happens when the Paladin and Slayer lay the battle plan. =) The second level...the rogue peeking in: The second level battle...really the pivotal battle in the session: And the top level where our cleric made a horrible but necessary decision. It looks involved...but really this encounter was a skill challenge and it decided the session. All in all...I ADORE working with foam. Light, easy to work with (when you have cutting tools). It looks fantastic and its very stable. Even though its more spendy then straight cardboard its not so expensive to cause concern. I am thinking we are going to see more foam in upcoming sessions. I also really liked being able to stack the "dungeon" and play our way up. This was an almost ideal solution to a tower or other genereally vertical oriented session. All in all, I think I spent about 1/4 the time making this setup in foam as I would have in cardboard. And...this set will be reuseable. My players will see this again...at some point.

I'm gonna have to get a hot wire foam cutter set. I love those walls, especially in the lava room.
Ashro, you should start a separate thread about the Skype game idea. I think it would be awesome!

I seem to have missed this one, oh well, better late than never. There's some fine work here, the characters facing off against the mirror is inspired. I also particularly like the design of your portal centre, why is it so bright in this pic, trick of the light or inner illumination?

Love what you did with the Temple piece. I am hoping to get my grubby little hands on some foam tools here soon and to start using more foam with my cardboard. So many killer ideas swirling around in my head. Can't wait to see more of your work, and play, in the near future. I love being inspired by what others are doing!
