A roller brush will NOT work...... Minis have too many, small and recessed areas of detail that can only be covered well via brushing or spraying (or dipping, but it's seriously messy). One easy way is to use Acrylic craft paints (like Apple Barrel or Plaid brand) and brush that on. Not sure how pricey it might wherever you live though. Good luck with whatever method you decide on though and keep in mind, use several thin coats when you paint rather than thick ones....

DMScotty, I never would have dreamed of using Hot Glue in the ways you show in your videos. I really appreciate your work. You've opened so many venues for me, as a miniaturist, modeler, and gamer. Thank you. Cheers! I second this sentiment! Cheers!

I like it! The chairs could be tipped easy nut that makes for great area denial....not to mention throwing them and bashing with them. Though I do agree with using matchsticks for the front legs, but only in an above ground "human" type bar. Gobbos are gonna use whatever they can get their hands on to make stuff with I seriously am going to go on a hunt for some mage knight doors.... those things are too cool...Wish they'd just start making the sets again...Seems that the true usefulness of stuff like that is only truly discovered after they go out of production....

Thanks for posting the link for the caveman set, monkeywithtacos! The ones with the rocks look like they could make some really great figures! I'll have to look at getting a set! Thanks skunkape, but I can't take credit for it..It was sgtslag above me who posted them first I only asked if he had some pics of the ones he had done alongside some standard minis for size comparison...

Beautiful work. For those of us who are less talented, like me, I would offer the suggestion to use 54mm Cavemen figures, available from Amazon.com, here. I used the tan plastic as the skin color, then painted the bits which were different in color, with craft paints (my entire set was tan plastic; use artist's Gesso to prime over the red plastic). Apply The Dip, a matte coat, and done. They work as shorter, less stocky Hill Giants, or even Ogres, more akin to 1st Ed AD&D Hill Giants for size, and bulk. YMMV. Cheers! Nice! Did you get any pics and size comparison pics by any chance that you could post. I am very intrigued...

I love Reaper's Bones! Wanted a Kobold army, for decades, for my BattleSystem Skirmish games, for an Underdark campaign (Gnomes vs. Kobolds, in large caverns, plus other battles in the ground), but never pulled the trigger... Until I saw the Bones Kobolds: 6 figures for $3! Picked up 10 packs. Now I just need to finish painting them (50% complete). Saw the Bones Skeletons -- couldn't resist, so inexpensive, so much fun to paint, so quick to paint! You can never have too many skeletons, IMO. Cheers! And what's really cool about the Reaper kobolds is that they are the OLD SCHOOL KOBOLDS! Don't get me wrong, I like the new look of D&D Kobolds, but as a player of 1st and 2nd edition I will never forget my first encounter with those "tiny, dog faced, horned, reptilian humanoids". The Reaper sculpts, as well as Otherworld Miniatures sculpts, of Kobolds bring back that awesome feel of nostalgia. And as I see more of the Otherworld sculpts I am finding their niche is that old school feel. Google them and check out their glabrezu, duergar, drow, hobgoblins, kobolds and their 2nd ed Players Handbook cover Demon/Devil statue! Truly epic!

those are amazing, great job. I also like the different colored pipe cleaners, I am guessing for spell zones and/or conditions... Yep, I use those to mark area of effect spells that have a duration of longer than one round. In this case the purple was a Darkness spell and the green was a Grease spell. I am still trying to track down small packages of them that have black and brown in them, but have so far had no luck. I have found larger packages with black in it, but I don't need a whole bunch of them =( Thanks again for the compliments. I will likely have more pics this weekend after our Thursday night session.

Very nice work Bloodchoke. The tiles look great! But I do have to offer one bit of opinion/constructive critcism, (take it or leave it as you will and please don't be offended by it)....In my humble opinion, you'd do well to commit to 3D dungeon furnishings instead of half and half. You crates and barrels look fantastic, and your tables are very cool, but mixing the two looks.... well.... a bit off.... to me. I offer this as constructive criticism only... Love your work and can't wait to see more!! Thanks a lot, I appreciate good criticism at least as much as compliments, since it can actually help make me better. And yeah, I think your right, it does look weird. It's difficult to visualize the tables as 3d objects when they're next to actual 3d objects. And that's probably a problem with the tables in general because there will almost always be other furnishings around. Adding some dowel or cardboard spacers underneath could raise your tables easily to the appropriate height and allow you to keep the awesome table sets in the process??

Since the last time I tried to clear coat my minis using a spray on matte varnish (a couple years back) and I ended up with a bunch of frosted over Cadian Imperial Guardsmen from Warhammer 40k, I decided to try some brush on matte varnish. I was hoping for a very low amount of shine from the matte varnish but it seems I am to be sadly disappointed. I am going to give it a day or two of dry time before making my final proclaimation, but I think I am going to be needing a recommendation for a good, inexpensive dullcoat. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Gonna try and get some picks of the newest ones taken and posted this week...

Damn you have been busy!! holy guacomole those look great. Had to chuckle at the Quaggoth in the first pic. I have a pair and think they are some of the coolest minis I have seen in a while. As to painting minis, get some of the Reaper, Vallejo or Games Workshop paints...those Apple Barrel ones are great for tiles and terrain, but not so much on minis in my experience.
Your tiles are seriously awesome to see and your players must seriously enjoy your games! Can't wait to see more!

Cool! I just bought some of the assorted size circular Woodsies to use as bases for some of the dollar store critters I picked up, but they are a tad pricey.... Gonna have to check these out. On the plus side I did manage to find some of the acrylic crystals that DMScotty used in his vid. Color me stoked!

I hadn't thought of using cork tile as a crafting medium... I'm gonna have to look into it for some pieces... Seriously awesome work on all fronts!
edit: fixed typo...meant cork, not cord

That is a great idea for the cube. It looks like a clear plastic bag of sorts taped into shape (over a box to get the shape?) then hot glue for texture and stability. Exactly. You don't really need a box but it can help. Update with guide. Sorry for the engRish, I'm Italian. gelatinous cube guideAwesome! Thank you!

For metal/lead/pewter and Games Workshop plastic and failcast finecast minis I use Krylon Gray Primer (make sure it says primer, not just flat gray or flat black) from Walmart that usually runs about a buck or two per can. On the Reaper Bones and the D&D and Pathfinder Battles plastic ones I have been using/testing Vallejo Brush Surface Primer #73601 (paid about $7 for a 60ml. bottle.) I have found with the latter that it is taking at least two coats to cover the minis and then I am having to come back with a layer of the craft store type acrylic (the inexpensive stuff ala Apple Barrel) and brushing on a layer of that so that my miniature paints have some texture to grab hold of. The results have been pretty good but it does add a lot more time into the painting process. I have used the same gray primer, that I use on the metal minis, on the Bones minis to good effect as well, so I may go back to that once the Vallejo runs out. One very very very important tip: Always wash your minis very thoroughly before you primer them!
And if you live in a hot area like I do, store your primers and sealers in the coolest place you can find and use them only during the cooler parts of the day. Otherwise you risk having the paint already becoming dry before it hits the mini as it leaves the nozzle which can lead to horrible results on your basecoats, and crystalized, dusty looks on your sealer coats that can only be fixed by stripping the entire model and starting over. =( As far as the tiles go, I just use the cheap, dollar or less a can, Wal-mart flat black spraypaint, then a light coat of the texture paint to liven things up before using the craft paints on them.
