The very first table top wargame my son played was with lego armies. I still have my orcs, trolls, and green dragon knights. It was a blast.
If you really want to get into it, there is a ton of third party weapons, armor, and equipment out there as well.

As characters get higher level flight is inevitable. I think it is based on the game/players. I played in one game where we all went 20+ levels and not one of us could fly unless the wizard case fly on us. In another game I played that also went past 20th almost all of us could fly using some magivc item we had. My character had a flying carpet. By the ay, as for cheap ideas, now only old dice boxes (still my favorite) but you can also use the lip of the clear boxes clix figures come in. Cheap and easy to find. Most clix collectors just toss them. If you are going to buy any of the new paizo Goblins for example, you will get one in each pack along with the figure.

Well done.

One would assume a high degree of regularity and standardisation in areas. I agree. I work in a 32 story building. I meet with folks on 20 of those floors. I can tell you this, other than the carpet color and wall paint, they all have 99% the same floor plan. Offices along the windows, cube city in the center. Kitchens and bathrooms near the elevators. I could make one tile and use it for about 28 of the 32 floors. I do know the 32nd floor (High level exec offices) is different and I know the third floor is different (computer farms) and the ground floor is different. So with four tiles you could have a 32 story building using the floor layout of my work.

The simple truth is, there is not a lot of the rules that are so tied to grids as to be a problem going gridless. 99% of the issues I hear are more that a person is worried about doing something "new". The great irony is that the game WAS gridless before they added grids so they could sell you tiles. People who get hung up on playing to the letter of the rules are reducing the fun of the game. They are not rules, they are guides. It says so on the covers of the books. Not sure I agree with this. Original DnD did show grids for the maps, it just did not require you to make 25mm scaled versions to play. But there have been grids sense the first edition. What 3.0 did was make it more integrated into the system and thus give the illusion that grids were needed. See the picturer of page 41 from the 1978 DnD Rulebook below. See the grids were there. It was just we were not hung up on them.

Nice, well done. You have inspired me. My kids played the mage knight and I have some figs packed away. I may get them out There is some great stuff in the Mage Knight line. Of course there is a lot of bad stuff too. But I have found some good figures in the Heroclix line as well. I did not expect to find as many nice figures but there are quite a few.

I love them. I can't tell you how many times I have gone back to a video to review something and I scroll to the header card. They are like chapter openers in a book. I would be sorry to see them go and would strongly advise you leave them in. Now having said that, do they have to be exactly the same? No if you want to switch them up or change them to match your desires, go for it, just keep the idea.

Ok, time to necro my own thread. :-) First, when I made this thread we didn't have a seperate mini section. Would one of the mods please move this over for me. In any case. I forgot to post pictures of my second batch. But here is pictures of batch #2 and batch #3. I will rebase even more later on this week.

How do I, easiest and affordable, create ways to have anything look like it is above ground level? I just use empty dice boxes without the bases for flying and some small clear lids for the hovering/floating.

I bought a bag of skulls that were a good buy, even though they were too big for medium-sized creatures and I didn't have any ideas of what to really do with them. I now have an idea! Yep, skull on a pike. Would be easy to make once you have the skulls. Don't forget to post pictures once you are done.

I have to confess, I love my grids..... in the right place. I can't imagine chess without the grid. What a pain measuring the movement for my pawns. I love my grids on my excel spreadsheets. I can't imagine trying to read them without the grids. Or trying to build the formulas without grid points.
But just because I love my grids in some parts of my life does not mean I have to use them in every part. Tabletop wargames do not need a grid. In fact when they try to force it it often fails (see Dust for an example) RPGs don't need a grid. Not that you can't use them in RPG games, they are just not "required".

I find real rocks left unpainted tend to look "too real" when placed next to painted figures and other props. The exceptions are crystals and some gemstones. But I have always painted my garden rock terrain. madladdesigns: Nice work. I liked that you tried to use different base sizes.

Here is a video reply I did about repainting this dragon and some other 3rd party miniatures. Nice video. I do agree 100% with you on the value of the third party figures. These dragons are very cheap when seen cost wise next to WotC dragons of the same size. I alos have some Star Wars figures in my collection for the same reason you do. There are some that could easily fit into a fantasy setting. Same goes for some toys. I have a couple of Storm Trooper Tank Bugs from Micro Machine that make great 28mm monsters. Anyway, thanks for showing us your video.

I like the idea of a smaller treasure pile "marker". Done on a 1" or smaller base. If I want a large pile I just place several markes down. I love this idea. Well done. Edit: I am also thinking by doing small markers some could be made with magic items etc on them as well.

Does anyone have a picture of a flocked Mage Knight or Hero/Horrorclix mini? I'm probably going to continue to rebase all of mine but if someone found a way to make them look alright, I may spend my time on other stuff. Here is one I thought didn't look too bad.
