This is my first attempt. Since these pics were taken I've also constructed doors and a few other additional pieces. I still have more to do and I have also done more displays. I have a group that just started going through Pathfinder, "Rise of the Rune Lords", and I'm trying to stay ahead of them with my constructions, thus not giving me a great deal of time for heavy detailing. I am having fun, though, with the construction. Attachments:

I love the wood grain. I did it with the hot glue gun, then painted it. It gives a great result! Attachments:

That's one cool looking dungeon! Beautiful tiles, ambitious 3D sections and the wooden construction adds a nice variety.
I think the wooden 3D section is a good example where crafting your own tiles really can help players get immersed in the setting. If using printed "wooden" tiles I would not think twice about casting a fireball if things got rough, but I think any player would consider if fire and explosion really was such a good idea when walking on your wooden bridge...

That is amazing work. I love the room with the pits and the wooden door covers. I remember fighting through that room, you captured it beautifully.

I think this looks wonderful. Well done. I really like the skulls and raised platform. The woodgrain also came out real well. Great work there.

That looks great, I think I'll have to us some ideas from it for my own up coming dungeon.

That just looks fantastic! I am super-digging the wood grain and would love to see some close ups of how you did that. I thought at first you had used popsicle sticks or something, but then I (duh) read your comments about hot glue, but I'd still love to hear more about how you did it. The whole dungeon looks great!

I suspect he used a very fine bead to make the "gaps" in the boards and then dry-brushed with the dark brown.

I suspect he used a very fine bead to make the "gaps" in the boards and then dry-brushed with the dark brown. I'll try it. I'm building a ship with several decks, so I guess I'd better get a couple of bags of hot glue... I hope I can make the decking uniform enough so that minis will stand up on it. I'll run some tests and see what I get. Thanks for idea -- I'm thinking you're correct.

Thanks for the comments, folks.
to answer the questions about my wood grain technique...The wood grain is actually very easy to accomplish. I used a regular sized hot glue Gun, and while adding small amounts of glue to the cardboard, I made quick back and forth motions, in straight lines, to create the grain. I then used flat black spray paint as a primer/base coat. After that was dried I used a dark/chocolate brown (somewhat watered down) and covered the entire piece. Finally, to bring out the wood grain, I used a "whitened" version of the same brown as a dry-brush over-coating. The grain simply pops out. Be careful that the hot glue isn't thick. It really takes very little.

Thanks for the reply! My high temp glue gun spits out a pretty big bead, and my low temp glue gun drools out a small bead but does so very slowly. I'll be posting pics tomorrow of the ship I began this weekend, but there is so much decking that I might not make the WILL save my patience would require to do the decking up like that. It looks so dangled good though. I'll experiment and see if I can get either of the glue guns to do the needful. Thanks again for the post and the tip!

Wow, that is amazing.. How did you do the 3D piece?

If you mean the "bridge" piece, I simply tried to construct it as an actual bridge would be done. The support planks (45 degree angles) are done with card stock that have the same wood grain effect on them. I glued the entire thing together before adding the wood grain.

Here are some pics of my continuing quest to create all of the necessary "dungeons" and buildings for Rise of the Rune Lords. This is the Glassworks from Sandpoint. I still have some accessory work to do. It's been fun working on is piece. Attachments:
