Alrighty, this is my beholder miniature project. I have limited materials but plenty of time.. while making a garden gnome I had some left over mortar (yeah, mortar.. works ok for outdoor sculpture pieces and its very cheap.. also, I totally bought the wrong product and I need to use it up). So, I pressed my thumb into a lump of plasticine and made a rough sphere shape, poured the mortar in, let it set, took it out and carved the basic shape of the beholder into it. This is the result.. Next step is using some two part epoxy glue and giving it some 'skin' and a large central eye. I shall keep posting pics on here as it comes along...

Very promising beginning! What did you use to carve the mortar?

Alrighty, here is an in progress shot of the eye as I make it, the whole thing is epoxy glue, I painted the pupil than layered some more epoxy, painted the white and veins and red/yellow part of the iris, then added more epoxy.. its a little more bubbly than I wanted, but hey, nobody is perfect. Next I will paint a green and gold flecked layer to the iris and the eye ball will be done. As you can see, I smear the left over epoxy on the beholder as I go, since I need it sealed before I attach eye stalks and the chitin plates afterwards.

I agree, the eye looks great. I really enjoyed reading about the artist's technique and your results are very effective.

just applied the last step and man.. this eye really pops.. the last drop of epoxy over the green and gold ring or the iris gives it a proper lens effect, I don't know if a photo will do it justice, but I'll post one in the morning. As a quicky project I am also making a Black pudding.. really basic, a lumpy blob of black painted mortar with epoxy tinted with acidic green which I am going to drool on and around the thing, mounting it on a base with some flocking. Will post pics of that also.

You'd be surprised, too, if you were a beholder and a group of adventurers didn't run from you.

Heh.. you guys. Well, I just made a heap of itty bitty fangs and a tentacle-like tongue (with suckers, because.. why not?) and used some plasticine to do a mock up of what the 'face' is going to look like, and yeah.. went from kind of cute and surprised, to vicious and predatory in about 2 minutes of quick sculpting and adjustment. Now I just have to figure out if my intent of supporting it on eye stalks and drool is going to work out.. I have my doubts, but maybe some wire support inside a green stuff eye stalk could do the trick. after I do the face and fleshy/gummy bits, I will sculpt and attach the eye stalks, and that will determine what shape and configuration I will follow for making the chitin plates which cover its 'body' and what other icky spike, rib and tentacle features I might add before finishing it up with paint, tinted and untinted epoxy, then fixing it to a base.

Greenstuff.Pretty common, very good for holding fine detail, hated it when I first used it, now I couldn't imagine not using it. Although the description I linked says it cures in two hours, the actual working time is measured in minutes. If you mix little bits and keep them wet, they set slower. The fangs were just pinched off a little ball I had kneaded together and rolled out in my fingertips, then left on my desk to set, I then smeared epoxy glue and let it go a little tacky, then pushed the fangs into it, adjusting them if they moved around with a tooth pick (used the other end of it to mix the epoxy), once they set in place, I painted them.. base of brown/green, then lighter shades, bit of yellow, gradually dry brushed on whiter tones. I've finished the mouth now, about to start on the eyestalks, which is a bit more tricky, so I have to give it some thought.. thinking about using wire, green stuff and a glue gun to make them. The squiggles to the right is a shot of the tentacle tongue from sort of top and bottom view.. I quite like those suckers on the underside of it. Once again, there is going to be a 'skin' layer on top of what you see here, I imagine this is what a skinned Beholder would look like though.. the eyelids and lips will cover a bit of the base of the fangs and make the eye look less surprised.

Eyes for the eye stalks, I made impressions in a bar of plasticine and filled them with epoxy, then painted the ten different iris/pupil versions (since they all fire different magical beams, thought that would make for ten eye variations), then added another layer of epoxy to finish them off. The epoxy doesn't adhere to the plasticine (since it is made of wax and oil), so once fully hardened I can take them out and set them into the eye stalks.

They look kinda scary already, although that might be because right now it looks like a beholder that melted

A bit more progress, now I have the method figured out for making the eye stalks and soft tissue, just a matter of getting it all done. On a side note, this project inspired me to upload a Youtube video where I talk about the Far Realm. Meet DM AJ! Its my first youtube video post, please be gentle (lol).

Bit of a leap toward completion. The eye stalks are all in place, I've added the skin and textured it, now I go over that with segments of shell-like chitin (just little flat lumps with a bit of texture, painting it should bring it out a lot more). As you can see, the whole thing can be supported with just the lowest eye stalk, which is how I plan to mount it on a base, so it has that floating effect without having to put a transparent strut under it. So far, so good. I was wondering, what sort of colour scheme do you guys think I should paint it with?

Maybe you should change that option to "pus-filled."

LOL! Oh man, never even occurred to me how that could.... *facepalm* I don't think I can alter it now. Ah well, looks like that option doesn't appeal to anyone (either way).
