Hey everyone first time post so be gentle with me.
I want to go gridless however my players like the templates they have for gridded play. I understand the squares become circles and blast become cones.
My question is whilst blast and burst can be done with a measuring stick is there a template somewhere I can use for cones with the correct degree of firing from the base of the players mini.
Many thanks and thanks for your help.

You might want to use a drawing, or drafting compass. You can set it's degree spread.

I'm not sure what system you're using, but in 3.5/Pathfinder, all cones are a 90 degree cone, so you can make a simple template out of card or something to get the angle, then measure the distance with sticks.

Thanks for that I'm playing 4e, I take it there are 1 inch increments on the range for the cone?

Yep, just make a 90 degree card template and just use 1inch increments for cone range. I say that anything touched by the template (not necessarily covered) can be hit. Roll to hit as usual.

Cones? Maybe I'm more confused about blasts and bursts than I realized. My understanding (4e) was that a burst 2 would extend 2" in every direction around the origin( a 3" diameter) and a blast 2 would simply be a 2" circle. I've just been using circles made of pipe cleaners. Am i doing this entirely wrong?

We use colored pipe cleaners. You can get a bag for just a buck or two. Bend the pipe cleaner to the desired effect shape and lay it on the table. It is unobtrusive and you can use red for fire, black for death effects, etc.
We have a druid that uses Entangle fairly often. Green square or circle, depending on your play style. Flame hand-orange triangle.
I like this method, because sometimes we use Feats to allow the caster to change the shape of the area of affect. Easy to reshape the pipe cleaner template. Use a Feat to change the look or elemental affect, just change the color of the pipe cleaner.

Are those homebrew feats, or have I just not seen them? I played my first PC last week, so I'm not nearly as familiar with PC stuff as I should be.
Pipe cleaners are very useful. We also use them for marking and for conditions, as well as movement. Small red loops work great for bloodied characters.
Still confused about the cone...
