I'm sure most of you use rulers, or measuring sticks, or even measuring tapes. There is another device that combines the benefits of both a measuring stick, and a flexible measuring device. I can't take credit for this as it was first published back in 1963 by Joseph Morechauser. Morechauser was one of the U.S.A.'s leading wargamers along with Jack Scruby. He published a book called "How to play Wargames" in 1963. One of the things you needed to play was a measuring stick with an attached cord. The stick could be marked off in inches, or movement rates, and the cord or string could be knotted in the center to depict half moves. This allowed gamers to move in curved lines around terrain obstacles.
I think this would be fairly easy to build. I'd start with a 1/2" dowel, and drill a 3/16th's hole into one end. The hole size will depend on the size of cord or string you want to use. The cord could be hot glued, epoxied, or gooped into the hole. A bead, or several beads could be glued at appropriate intervals, or lines marked in 1" increments to make measuring easier. The end could then be cut and knotted or sealed with heat.
In a pinch you could always flog your players too.... Just don't give them one or they will fight back!

Cool idea.
My players each have a measurement device made out of two pipe cleaners twisted together, with each having a distinctive color. This works well for moving around terrain also, though they usually just use the wooden sticks I made. Those who can mark, quarry, etc. also have a loop of the same two colors to mark the minis.

Good idea. Thanks for sharing, both of you. I've seen various methods, but not these. Cheers!
