Okay. How about this one? The party faces a long narrow corridor (let's say 20') with an unusual, but not obvious base bricking (like baseboard, but brick or stone) half way down and a very large chest at the very end. While we would expect the party to be a bit suspicious of this this, how far into the corridor would they expect the trap? In this case, the first step in springs the trap...as the corridor floor is a counterbalanced seesaw...and the chest, fixed to the far end, contains a flood of acid. The victim falls albeit it gently into a pit too deep to simply climb out as the flood of acid pours down the floor right at the character. For added nasty, there could already be acid in the bottom for some damage or more pours out onto them right where they are (they popped the plugs out when the sprung the trap). For added niceness and mercy, the chest is an illusion that can be disbelieved, seeing the vat of acid through the illusion. The way to cross is to scale the base bricks or straddle the corridor, impossible for halflings and gnomes as it is just too wide. Half way down the corridor on one or either sides are concealed or secret doors.
Thoughts?

I would make the hazard an active hazard. Snake pit with a big-bad snake in it. Something they can fight off.
As a player a passive hazard is like: fail a roll, take damage, allies laugh and toss down a rope
whereas an active hazard is like: fail a roll, fall in a hole with pools of acid on each side, fend off oozes and acidic tentacles, allies jump in to help, epic adventuring commences.

How about green slime down in there? I like the tentacles idea too, on account I just made some. Also, I could add spikes or blades that pop out of the walls when the floor falls through, making it hazardous to climb out as the acid rushing toward the character.

Put the green slime in the chest, so it falls on the player in the pit.
