Wow, you can make some truly massive dungeons from all those tiles. Impressive set.

Where are you getting texture paint for $4.50? Cheapest I found is about $8, except for one time I found a dropped can on the clearance shelf at Hobby Lobby.
Nice tile set, btw!

For the set I used about 1/2 a can of texture paint - so its not scientific - but 4.50 is very close to the cost for the set. For the whole can - you are correct its eight to ten dollars for texture paint. I should have made it clear that the cost estimate is for the set not the complete cost of materials.

I just hoped that you had found a ridiculously good deal somewhere.

Well done! That's a lot of cardboard! Thanks my favorite place to get cardboard is a furniture store. At times they have 5' by 4' sheets of double ply - I believe large glass pieces are packed in these.

For some reason, that reminds me of the big pile of Legos I had when I was a kid. In other words: Awesome!

WHERE did you get texture paint for that cheap?! I must have gone to the wrong place because it cost me ten bucks per bottle! Michael's is ridiculous! It's not even the kind that I wanted, either. Bah, humbug.

Has anyone tried to sprinkle paint with an old toothbrush (or something similar) on a dungeon surface basepainted black substitute the texture spraypaint?

I make textured paint, cheap: mix in sand (playground, street, etc. -- free!) with whatever color craft paint needed, as much as necessary to achieve the amount of texture required, then brush on, with an old brush -- the sand will wreak havoc on the bristles. I would use the cheapest paint brushes you can get; depending on size needed, 'school paint brushes' are sold at Wal-Mart, 30 brushes for around $1-$2 (perfect for applying The Dip, throw out when done doing a batch of mini's; grab another, next time). Otherwise, buy a 5-pack of home paint brushes, 1"-5" wide heads, typically less than $2-$3 a pack. Cheers!

If you want physical texture, then sand as sgtslag has suggested works well. If, however, you are satisfied with the illusion of texture, then the sponge method thedmg uses is the way to go. I think using a toothbrush to flick paint would be messy, time consuming and produce results better achieved with a sponge.
