I gave my players a taste of gridless combat this past weekend for the first time. I just ran a simple battle on a cave tile I made so that we could go over the basics and I could judge how the felt about it. They LOVED it.
They said they felt very free in their movements and that the overall feel inspired creativity in combat. My players have been fairly static in their attacks up until this point despite whatever craziness I have thrown at them so my hope is that with gridless they'll think with a little more creativity.
Thanks for the system and the Ideas I've gotten so far and into the future.
Happy Gaming

Excellent. Now all we have to do is... what is next? Damn I forgot the ritual...

Glad they enjoyed it. it really is a breath of fresh air from the restrictive grid. I find that players are more creative also.

Glad they enjoyed it. it really is a breath of fresh air from the restrictive grid. I find that players are more creative also. My players had absolutely no problem with going gridless. I just passed out the measuring sticks and they went right along with it. It's much less headache, not having to worry about burst templates and how many squares it costs to move diagonally. A couple of my players have a lot of disposable income, and they've accumulated a ton of Dwarven Forge. So they've got everything inside or underground covered, and we use gridded movement for that. I wanted to make 3D terrain for outside encounters, to complement the Dwarven Forge tiles, and agonized over how I was going to put a grid on a swamp, or a forest floor -- until I saw your vids and said "screw it, let's do it gridless." It's been great so far...

Just keep in mind that even with Dwarven Forge you can "go gridless". Just because there is a tile pattern that makes it look like a grid does not mean you can't ignore them and use the ruler and gridless anyway.
