Hey I've been watching DM Scotty's videos for a little while, really enjoy them, & I've decided to try it for the first time. I think I'm trying something ambitious so I thought I'd ask for some addvice.
My project is a Black Dragon's lair, I've broken it into 3 tiles because the lair is at 3 differennt elevations. My players have been traveling through a cavern system & are almost out, but to get out they will have to pass througj this lair. The entance is one level, to the left there is a area that drops down into a filthy swampy muck where the Black Dragon rests & keeps his hoard, to right 30 ft up there is another level where the exit is. I have the tiles shapes cut out & walls on. really I have 2 questions. 1 is what is the best way to give it that 3 tier look, & 2 what is the best way to make the swampy area really pop.
Thanks, Polk

Hi, you could glue another layer of cardboard under the tiles to raise them up. 1 layer on one part and 2 on the other. Then I would use strips of card stock to cover the corrugation on the sides exposed in the playing area. You could then add stairways at various points like the sides or the middle of each rise.

That's what I was thinking for the elivation, I'm not planning on having any stairs, but I was going to have a rope ladder at the top. My players won't be fighting the dragon, they are far to low lv for that. I'm setting this encounter up so they are going to be tested by this Dragon. I'm going to have them fight some of his lackies, & if they can impress him he's going to help them.
So what can I use other than paint & glue gun to really make the swampy tile stand out, they may not be fighting this dragon right now byt I would like to possibly bbring them bback to face him later

Markers could work for the coloring. Check your local Dollar store and see if they have bags of assorted fake moss that you could use. I recently picked up 2 bags for $2 at Dollar Tree..

If you want muddy muck, do a few ripple circles with the glue gun. Then paint brown and grey and let dry. Then pour on some white glue and stick in some tufts of grass (old brush brissles - black would be good). Also add bits of sand here and there and mix a bit maybe with a bit more brown and grey paint swirls. Let the white glue dry and repaint if necessary. You can then paints the sand and tufts brown, or the tufts green, depending on your taste.

If you're looking for some dramatic elevation, you could try adding some columns to the bases of the raised tiles. You could use toilet paper/paper towel rolls (covered with DM Scotty's glue-soaked TP method), or carved foam columns. Give them a rocky texture and paint job so they fit with the theme. Maybe cut the rolls in half for the "middle level," and then use full sized rolls for the "upper level." Just place the tiles next to each other and have your rope ladders dangling down...

Adding to what thedmg said, make sure to add a couple layers of varnish over any area that's supposed to be wet. And along with the moss idea, you could put little hummocks around the swampy parts -- little raised areas of land that are covered with moss but surrounded by mucky swamp water. Also, if you had any skeleton figs to spare, you could lop off a couple of arms, put them reaching up from the center of a well varnished pool of black, and make their hands just millimeters away from a rope or vine leading to shore...

Thanks for all the advice. I think this is going to come out epic... Quick question, what kind of vanish do I use?
