Hello, I am Baja Blaster, and I used to like grids.
I came across the DM's Craft videos about a week ago and was intrigued by crafting dungeon tiles. The videos were entertaining and made what looked like a daunting task look easily achievable. Everytime gridless play was mentioned though I cringed. I liked my squares and grids, and wanted to cling to them like a safety blanket. As I watched more and more videos gridless play kept getting brought up and slowly I started paying more attention to what was being said. Questions I had or didn't think of were answered, and as I began to understand things I was able to figure out answers for myself. I don't know what happened, but I woke up one day and found myself quite the fan of gridless play.
The appeal of gridless play was so much that I decided that when it became my turn to DM in the group that I was going to use gridless no matter what. I told my current DM this, and after an hour or so of using quarters, sugar packets, and other objects that were on our table at Norm's to illustrate things, he got hooked on the idea too. We have all the materials we need to convert to gridless play along with some material for custom bases. This weekend when we should be playing next we will be going off the grid and stepping into the more free flowing style of gridless play.
Most of the players have been notified and have agreed to three full sessions of gridless play to see if they like it. Our group currently plays pathfinder, and one problem our Oracle has at the moment is movement. He built himself up as a healer, and finds himself having some trouble from time to time moving on the grid to get the most benefit from his AoE heals. I have a feeling being able to go "Everyone in three inches of my base gets healed" will be very nice compared to "I can't heal both the ranger and the wizard because their squares don't align correctly in the grid".
I'm excited about gridless, my DM is excited about gridless, and the rest of the players are very open minded about it. I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend. I'll post back after our session to say how it was received.
