Here is a pic of my keg. It is made with a wine cork that I glued thin strips of card stock around for the boards. The base is just cardboard that I cut to fit the shape of the barrel. Two more strips of card stock for the metal banding. The spout is just card stock that I hot glued to the front.

Boiled and curved tongue depressors, cardboard banding. Next one I want to do different width strips to emulate how actual barrels are made and reduce the gaps. The curvature is more pronounced if you allow them to dry while in the curving apparatus (large mug), I failed to do this... Your cork idea is fantastic for smaller vats. You could just carve in the grooves and whittle the edges of the cork itself, then apply cardboard banding...

I had a big pile of them in my garage and this is what I came up with to use them instead of throwing them away.

I suppose actual "cork" is now not as easy to find as all the vintners have changed to plastic/rubber/silicone or whatever it is. I don't drink so that makes it even more difficult
