I'm starting up a DnD fight club, in which people can quickly draw up a character (I'm using DnD 4th for ease of use and emphasis on tactical combat) and put it on an arena tile to engage others in pvp combat. I want the arena to be large enough to house multi-player spectacle matches and I want to create some modular traps to place around to mix things up. I also want the whole thing to be at least semi-portable so I can take it to cons and other gaming events. I intend to make mark I a 2.5 d design based on DM Scotty's tutorials, but would like for future versions to use 3d stands and whatever cool stuff I can add in. However, I could use some guidance in a few areas. Also, DM Scotty, if you wanted to make an episode of your show about making an arena, that would be cool and I would love to see your take on the concept.
How big should it be? I'm thinking a foot squared for the tile, but I feel like I might want to make it bigger.
How should I paint it? I'm thinking stone texture, multi-tiered for the seats around the arena, but I would like to know what colors to use to make it more greco-roman. I also have questions about the actual arena floor. I'm thinking that I should make it a sand-covered floor, but I'm thinking that the rocks in the construction sand will be a bit much. Would this be the one instance where finer play sand would be more appropriate?
How can I make it 3d? Mostly I want to make the seats around the arena three dimensional and, provided I don't make them too high, they shouldn't obstruct the action going on in the arena. The real question is how to make them, especially since I want to make the whole thing portable. Should I make the seats separately and make a space for them on the border of the tile to place when I set the whole thing up?
Also, any ideas for traps I can make would be appreciated. I already am thinking of pillars to place around and whirling blade traps, but any other ideas would be helpful.
