Ok, so I am running an Ebberon/Firefly Campaign and just finished making the pc's flying ship. But I want the one thing that would make the tile pop like crazy. I want to make a ring of fire to surround the ship. Something like the attachement I put there. Just something that I can put up or take down. Plus will give a nice thing to break I mean....threaten the pcs with.... What I have tried to do so far: I got a sturdy wire that will stand on its own to stand outside the tile. I tried to do glue water and cotton balls but they wouldnt stick out enough for me and wouldnt stay on the wire, not sure if I used enough glue in the water since its my first time with this method, any ideas? Gotta go try and paint the ship now hope someone has an idea to help. Attachments:

That looks like a job for tinted epoxy resin. Grab some ultra clear two part epoxy resin, add tiny amounts of yellow, orange and red acrylic paint to it and apply it in layers to a ring made of the same stuff.. build it up slowly and carefully, I'd imagine using a technique similar to making something out of dripping or tacky wax, and you should end up with something pretty close to what you are after.

Id rather stay with household items, I need to stay on the cheap with this since I just bought all the crafting things to begin with. (Would rather not tell my wife I need to go out and spend more money.)

I'm thinking all you need is this... A 24 ml tube of glue, and Some cut price paint, you can probably pick them up at a supermarket next time you buy groceries. And you can make stuff like this... The only tools you need are a stick, a toothpick and some scrap cardboard and paper. It doesn't have to be expensive

What about layering hot glue in the method AJ suggested in the second post? Might be able to get away with using your wire ring as the core.

If the ship is going to be flat like a tile all you need to worry about is making the top half of the ring. You could simply make a ring of cardboard, add some hot glue for fire texture and attach it with wood sticks for strength. Just paint the fire the way I do it in my vids....easy and cheap.

I thought about that but wanted it to really pop, but in the end this will probably be what I go with was hoping for more of a 3d effect

Cool project, I like that paint job on the deck. I've been browsing for ship deck maps and there are lots to choose from. I like the size of at least a caravel or bigger, it makes for easier combats.

How about getting a cardboard ring (made of several rings glued together) and then layering on that? Think of it like a vertical tile, and then add some fire texture with glue or steal ideas from the Flaming Sphere spell effect video. That's a rather good flame effect on there, so it makes sense to adapt it.

If you make half a ring like DMScotty suggested, maybe you could put it and the tile on a mirror, just for that session, for an illusion of being airborne and completing the ring.

The mirror is a great idea.
