I am running a modern game setting and wondered if anyone had any tips or advice for making modern terrain.

depending on the location I picture alot of concrete/grafiti or you could go the industrial look. In either case, it depends the complexity of your tiles and walls if used. One important note, most everything will be squared corners...

Modern should be just as easy as fantasy. Just use Blacknight's advice.

Most of the same techniques should work. One way to quickly give a tile a modern feel would be to include a specifically modern feature. For instance, putting a manhole cover in a road tile, or including a sidewalk on the outside of a building tile. Simple accessories like a mailbox, light pole, or a fire hydrant added to an outdoors scene would definitely make it look modern. Update: I just visited an RPG blog with some cool pics of construction tunnels underneath New York City. Great inspiration for modern tiles! bigballofnofun.blogspot.ca/2013/03/rpgs-meets-real-life.htmlAlso, I was thinking, another way to make tiles look modern would be to use more colour contrasts. Rather than blending everything, make divisions between colours sharp and definite. Use bright yellow, neon orange, etc. Think how a modern road is uniform black with sharply delineated yellow lines versus a fantasy road with muted colours depicting dirt and cobblestones.

I love the idea of modern tiles! Maybe some 1920 or 30s?

In some ways modern is simpler because so many pieces of trash can be used to really create an industrial or modern look. Do a youtube search for cheap wargaming terrain and you will see a lot of cool videos of water bottle fuel tanks, bottle caps glued to the top of Kleenex boxes for chimneys and so on. The look much better than I just described.

Yeah. When we were playing Necromunda regularly, we made our own terrain from all types of trash.
