Hello just found your site a few days ago. I was looking at the first vid and I like the way you made the sticks. Do you have a video or post where you talk about making those?
What kind of sticks did you use? how did you make the markings on the two sticks?

You can get 1/4" square dowels at the local hardware store. Cut some 6" and 10" ones, seem the most frequently used size. I spray painted mine orange and then filled in every other 1" band with a silver sharpie marker. It is easy to find on a cluttered gaming table.
Good luck

I used a 1/4 square dowels also. What I did was made mine 4",6", and a 12". That way I had a move stick for Small Med and one for anything that was up to 12". I then just marked it every 1" and painted them Black and Red. I just used normal cheep craft paint and watered it down to make a wash out of it. Soaks right into the wood that way.

yes scotty please do. i think it would help alot of people and can go into the short tips.
I made mine out of 12' circular wooden poles and then colored each 1' marker. Then i chose 2 shades of a certain color for each of the 5. 1 for each player and 1 for the dm.

I don't think so. It's really easy to do, and there are a wide variety of ways that it can be done to your group's taste. BUT, if you did make a video on it, I'd make it a short one. Not a full blown one.
I actually use round dowels for measuring...it works ok, but there are definitely good reasons for why you should do it with square dowels. One good reason is that on a smooth flat surface, square dowels don't roll away from you...

You could also use popsicle / lollypop sticks: "How do you pick them up if they're flat?" Use as lump of sticky / Blu tack!

I took round dowels, cut them to the length I wanted, then painted the entire length red. Using 1 inch wide painters tape, I sectioned off areas so that I would have the paint exposed, then 1 inch of tape, than paint, then tape, etc.
Then I repainted the exposed areas with black spray paint.

I used 1/4 basswood sticks from Hobby Lobby. I stained them and used a wood burner to make the 1" increments. I have the standard 6" and 10" and when I had a couple players roll up gnomes I made a couple 4" for them.
I like the wood burner as it lets you feel the increments. I might look at some high visibility separation on the increments...but so far my players have not mentioned it or complained.

... round dowels for measuring... roll away from you... A rubber band, doubled and redoubled until it was nice and tight, would help with that.

I made my measuring sticks out of anger... took a few of my wife's wooden spoons and cut the spoon end off then painted them up real nice. Dollar store sells packs of 3 - 5 spoons of different length for a buck, nice and cheap option if you need one.

Those Bamboo skewer sticks that you use for BBQ's are also fine, and very cheap. You know the ones? Sharp at the end, you shove bits of pineapple, onion, sweet pepper and ham on them? Just cut the end off with some scissors, measure it off with a marker pen.

I just cut a strip of foam board to make mine, but I made it 20' for easily determining range on long bows and such. It works, but it's gotten bent up over the last couple months, so I need to make another one out of wood.
Also my players have their own made from two colors of pipe cleaners twisted together and cut to the length of their movement. This works well for moving around obstacles since the pipe cleaners can also be bent. Each player has his own color combo, and those with marking/hunter's quarry, etc. have a pipe cleaner loop in the same colors to mark minis with. They came up with that and I thought it was an excellent idea.

I got myself a square stick, and sawed it into a few pieces, one for every one of my players and one for me, of 6 inches. Then I measured each inch and marked it, and viled it with a file. Where the file went was really easy to mark with a marker. It makes it a bit less sturdy, but as long as you don+t throw them around the room they should be fine. As a finishing touch I painted them in the die-colour style; y'know, a green leafy green theme and a fiery red theme. Of course I varnised them to seal the paint and to make them smoother.
Oh, I also made one longer one, for measuring ranged attacks and the like.
