I'm a player and I want to help my dm make some tiles. Is there anyway I could help with out ruining the surprise of the encounter?

You could find out the environment you will be adventuring in such as a cave or dungeon and make some general purpose tiles.

Yup I would love it one of my players would ask me if there was something they could make. I know of a few things that would not rune the encounter that they could make to help me out.

Make some props... bookshelfs, tables some altars, crates, coffins, torches basically anything that gives that little extra that does a LOT for the tiles

You could also craft various regular doors (normal, iron bound, double doors, etc.)
Barrels, boxes, torches, various statues, etc.
Remains (whole, skeletal, human, animal, etc.)
Rubble/ruins to drop into the room, containing things such as swords, rocks, wall sections, etc.
Maybe some stairs of various sizes and shapes (circular, etc.) that he could just drop onto the tile (stairs leading down needs to be built into the tile, but stairs up could be done.
I'll try to think of more, but theres some ideas.

I have had 2 of the players that will be playing the campaign I am building tiles for sit and help me with entire maps. Its an experience for all of us to make them, and then to see them come together when they are done. I play with a great group though, so the player versus character knowledge is not something I ever worry about. Either way, they don't have access to the story, so they can see all the rooms and terrains they want to see. There's no way they will remember every room of every map in Rise of THe Runelords when we start running it in 3-6 months. Especially since we are currently playing in Skull & Shackles! lol

This doesn't work for all DMs, but if he/she has two separate groups, the two groups can make the maps/props for the other groups' game.

A couple things. My wife and teenage kids plays and the wife is actually the principle tile maker. A few things that have helped me:
1) Lie...well at least misdirect. I am always feeding in subtle misdirection. I let slip "orc" when not a single orc will be in the tile set.
2) Hide your trap crafting/skill crafting. I tell them all, point blank...I am making "encounter enhancements" and they are not allowed anywhere near the work.
3) Hide your miniatures. Mostly. I dont always do this...but some of the painted plastic minis really let me bring some spice and surprise to even the wife and kids. My minis are kept in opaque plastic containers and there are strict instructions NOT to peek. They are into being surprised so they generally comply. Somtimes I just swear the wife to secrecy and while she knows, obviously, she is painting some sort of boss werewolf or whatever, thats all she knows. And...I go out of my way to make the boss meetup memorable and NOT predictable.
Actually, crafting with your players really forces you to think your encounters through. All of the encounters I run have some kind of "gotcha" or a twist or hook. Its good to keep my craft mates on their toes...and my old salts are sitting up in their chairs when I tell em to "roll initiative". I think I have some of em spooked. As the newbies are coming along I am pushing their combat tactics and problem solving skills to new levels.
