Greetings all! I watched all of the videos over xmas break and here is my first attempt. My group's PCs were hired under the pretense of guarding cargo aboard a ship when, in actuality, an enemy of the PCs had arranged for this job and for the PCs to be killed while they were out at sea. The PCs got wind of this plot and a combat aboard the ship ensued. I based this first tile attempt off of a few different caravel style ships. Although I've never done anything like this before it was fun, fairly easy and relatively quick to complete. I will definitely be doing more of this for upcoming adventures. I've even set up a crafting station downstairs next to my gaming area. Hope you like! (My players certainly did!) Gamemaster Kenn Attachments:

Really nice work, friend. And for your first attempt? Bravo! (Disembodied voice: "Karma acquired.")

Wow, nice attention to details! I really liked how you used double cardboard on main deck and thin cardstock around the ship. And stairs, and watchtower on the mast and ... Looks great!

Thanks to everyone for your kind words of encouragement. I appreciate it. Like I said, never done anything like this before and I'm really getting into it.
As far as the barrels go...
I went to Hobby Lobby to see if they had any wooden spools or other things I could use for barrels... and it turns out they HAD unpainted mini pickle barrels. They also had a larger size which would probably work for a cask but these mini ones were perfect for me. I think they were 9 for $1.47 so I ended up getting 3 packs and still have some unpainted. They also had little wooden cubes that work great for crates. I don't have them shown in the pics because the party hadn't made their way into the secure hold area where the loot is...

I'm VERY impressed with your work. I was looking for a way to create a Dark Sun Merchant Caravan argosy with its multiple levels...
Looks like you found a way for me to represent it!

Looking to do a ship now. Just wondering how wide and how long is each deck of the ship. That will give me a better idea on a way to go when I do mine.

What was your technique for painting the wood? Just progressively lighter shades of brown, painting along the grain?

Actually the top deck, the deck just below it, and *POSSIBLY* the one lower than that one could be the same width. It's when the decks get to a point below the water line that they start to taper off. An easy way to do this is to take the top width, divide it by three, and the deck below the water line is 2/3rds the width of the top deck, and the one below that will be 1/3rd the width of the top deck. At least in floor space. The wall space will of course be wider, unless the ship builders wanted nice clean 45 degree angles on the walls for the lowers decks. Because of the actual limitations on real estate, I wouldn't see why they would do this really.
Now the LENGTH of the ship may be a bit trickier to do, because that tapers from the fore almost immediately. I'd divide the length by 12, and taper the fore of the ship by one increment for each level (so that you have the lowest level about 2/3rds the size of the top level in length on a ship with four lower decks, which is about right). Keep in mind that the fore of the ship begins to curve in sooner than the aft, but the aft also curves in a little bit (Or rather, gets cut in so that the rudder can be placed).
So, just some slap-dash thoughts (Which are probably far from accurate in ship-building to be honest) that could make a ship more "realistic."

What was your technique for painting the wood? Just progressively lighter shades of brown, painting along the grain? Yes. I figured from what I'd seen and heard on here that if I went with a little bit wetter paint that the corrugation would show through and I thought that would kind of simulate planks. I did black > burnt umber > moccasin brown with some highlights of chocolate brown > cocoa > latte to give a bit more variance. My burnt umber coat was with a wet brush.

Very inspiring...also love the details on scaling and painting. Thanks for sharing. Having posted a few of my own projects I realize it is a lot of work to photograph, rescale, upload and write text for each piece. Thanks for taking the time to share.
My adventure is in a jungle but you have made me want to move to the open waters... Awesome

My adventure is in a jungle but you have made me want to move to the open waters... Awesome Thank you very much! This was my first DM Scotty project and so far my biggest. I'm thinking on doing a haunted cyprus swamp in the near future myself. I just wish it would warm up enough so that I could start spray painting stuff outside. I've been 'banned' from doing it in the house and/or garage due to fumes so I've only been able to do smaller, prop type projects since I did this one.

Man, I am impressed with the ability of the staff here at making boats and fleets! The ideas are fantastic!
I think it's possible to make a boat look good with details and ralistas using the larger side of the cardboard! I will make an attempt using the Scotty´s painting techniques.
