Does anybody have any tips or thoughts on how to make treasure chests for an RPG?

I know this is not a chest, but rather a pile of gold, but it was too good not to post.

it depends on the scale you want to have for your game. If you want a life size prop that you can pass around and show off to get ooh-ing and ahh-ing, Hobby Lobby has you covered (I'm sure other hobby stores sell something similar, but if not, go to Hobbylobby.com). Wood stain or paint, and your good (except for items to put in said chest)
if you want a small scale treasure chest, then you can either look for some sort of toy chest (Yay legos!) and repurpose them...some miniature companies (Soda pop minis) make chest minis.
If you want to craft, then you need a base structure, ie a small box. Not hard to make, just use DM scotty's pillar idea and change the dimensions. Then you need some cardstock bands to run along the chest for dimension and realism, and then some paint. And done.
Another alternative is use a basic shape mold for clay, and have at it.
so, a few fast and easy suggestions. Hope it helps...sorry I am not as detailed here as I usually am.

You could also, with some work, take a small block of wood, then here comes the harder part, split a dowel that is the proper diameter to fit on the block of wood, that becomes the top of the chest, which you either glue open or closed.
More work, but would be fairly inexpensive!
Also, there are cardstock alternatives out there as well. Nice thing about going with cardstock, because you get a PDF that you print, you can make as many chests as you want!

I made one out of hot-glued cardstock and cardboard. I'm almost done painting a bunch of dungeon dressings that I'm making. I'll post pics soon, if you want to see the finished product.
