I was wondering if anybody had ideas about doing "ground cover" for outdoor scenarios. I was thinking about using a large piece of felt, but felt has an ungodly, never seen shade of green.
I like the look of static grass and I am aware that some of the German model train manufacturers (i.e. Faller) offer grass mats. But they are expensive and also have realism problems.
Any thoughts on creating a mat that is portable, looks great and is robust?

Are you trying to mark out areas of thicker vegetation (for cover), or did you just want a grass colored mat for outdoor battles? For my outdoor encounters I just got piece of cloth from the fabric store that looks like grass and I just use it like a table cloth.

I was thinking about using the felt as a kind of base on which I could put elements like trees, vegetation, roads, hills, rivers, etc. on top of.
So you don't find that the "non-grass" characteristic of cloth distracts from players to be immersed in the scenario?

The cloth I got at the fabric store has a very similar color to ground cover and it also has a sort of pile texture so it kinda simulates grass.

...For those areas you could use some thin cardboard and either paint a little texture paste/hot glue on it and paint it up.

I used to buy the loose grass they sell for the train modelers and then just glue it to a board. The loose stuff is still pretty cheap on Amazon and such I believe, around $3 a bag. If you paint plywood with a mottled effect of different shades of green and then put the train grass on top, it looks ok, to me at least =P I have heard of people making the loose grass themselves by dying sawdust green and then tossing it into a blender and letting that dry. I haven't tried it myself though. matakishi, those boards are BEAUTIFUL!!
