Hello was not to sure where to put this info at. In a previous campaign I had my players enter into a race. They had to chose if there mount was a front runner, mid runner, Or a end runner. The race track was huge. 12-15 squares wide and 30-40 squares long with the rounded corners. It looked like a horse track you would see in Kentucky. I had 8-10 players and 6-8 npc riders. there all lined up at the strting line when they hear the horns call. Off they go. The rules where simple. You rolled a d10 to move. if you went straight you just moved what the dice said. If you moved out of your lane like most did getting around the first rounded corners it cost you an extra point. Or to go around someone it cost an extra point if you had the go left or right out of your lane. If your mount was a front runner then your first lap you rolled a D20 to move.(i had them roll a D20 and made sure the result was a 10 or higher to move thru the whole lap). If you mount was a mid runner then once you made it to the second round you rolled a D20 to move. If your mount was a End runner then the third and final round the player rolled a d20 to move. I also let the players and npc's have opportunity to some what fight or knock each other around. One of the npc got knocked into the crowd and took a player with him and they started to fight and the player knocked out the npc for 3 rounds and got back on his mount and on the track once again. I made this scenario for my players to get the reward item that they needed to move on with there quest. if you got hit then you normally lost a round. or if you where to initiate a hit you couldn't move that round. I normally would have the player roll a d20 with me and who's ever dice was the most won the battle. I have to say it was so much fun to run this encounter. I had not experienced that much excitement from my players before or since. We started with players around the table sitting there watching it play out and by time we got to the third and final round no one was sitting in a chair but me and people where blowing on the dice saying things like moma needs a new pair of shoes. reminded me of a craps table in las vegas. a npc was in the lead when a end runner crossed the line going into his third lap. As the race was coming to its end that player remarkably rolled 8-10 times that last lap and hit nothing but 19's and 20's. one of the other players that was ahead with the npc who was in first sacrificed himself and kicked the crap out of the npc and they ended up into the stands. As the player who's mount was an end runner was passing players and npc alike his last roll he needed was a d20 to win the race or the very next turn another player only needed a 2 or better to win it. The tension couldn't have been higher. it took him probably 10 min to roll that dice. During which time the other players kept telling him to do certain rituals before he rolls. Well he finally roled the d20 and it was if time stood, still silence hushed the room as the die came out his hand and started to roll down the table with everyone to there feet(even me) all of us looking at the numbers on the die. There it was with a roar from everyone there a nat 20 appeared. It was like he had just won the world series or Super bowl. We where celebrating like wouldn't believe. He was so excited and so was everyone else at the table including me. I just wanted to share this so maybe you can do this kinda thing at your table. I know its not a puzzle but i thought it would be good to share this exciting encounter anyway.
