It occurs to me that if you wanted to build a tower model, or other structure itwould be fairly easy to do. The first thing to do is lift each layer so that it sits on top of each other. You can prchase 3/4" and 1" wooden cubes from craft stores. Glue 2 together to make longer cubes. Add one to each corner, with a dot of sticky stuf for hanging up posters and lay the next level on top. Repeat as needed. To make sure the building is square use an old dictionary or other heavy book and use the flat side as a square to make sure the tiles line up.
To build the outside skin, there are several options. First you could make the outside like a regular tile and glue the four sides together making a sheath to slide over the tiles. Another option is to use poster board, matte board or thicker cardstock and use similar techniques to create the buildings skin. The nice thing about cardboard and other paper products is that they are recycleable, where foam isn't always so.
So what you end up with is a nice 3D model, that you can use in a game as an objective. When the players arrive then the tiles acan be used as normal. You can also leave the block pillars in place and have a cool see through display when not in use!

DM Scotty has a video showing how to do this, with some really nice cardboard buildings. This is my first attempt from a few months ago, using the restaurant from David Graffam Models.
