Hello DM's Craft community, this is my first post here. Sorry in advance, as I am sure this has been asked before, though I cannot find the answer on this site. "What is the best material to build your tiles out of?" I assume it is plaster I am seeing in all these videos... what kind of plaster works best? Plaster can be so easily broken, I wonder is there another material to use instead?

The majority of the tiles here are crafted from cardboard. Some are styrofoam or foamcore, but cardboard is the medium of choice.
Look on You Tube for DMScotty's videos. They are easy to follow and explain most you will need to know. Thedmg also has some good vids.

For plaster, I prefer Merlin's Magic, which is a high strength plaster, I believe originally formulated from dental plaster. The problems with most plaster you get from big box stores is they don't have a lot of strength, but they're also not intended to be used as game pieces! I got into using Hirst Arts molds, which you use to make plaster castings, very time consuming and also not as easy to store as cardboard tiles are. Course their weight makes it easier to use them on the table because they tend not to slide around the table like cardstock or cardboard terrain does. Also, Merlin's Magic sets much faster than hydrocal about 15 minutes to demold, most plaster from places like Home Depot is made from hydrocal and takes much longer to set. Here is a link for the page which talks about Merlin's Magic on Bruce Hirst's website. hirstarts.com/casting/dental.html#merlinI bought mine through Clint Sales because they were the closest to me at the time I bought it. But like belatucadras says, most of the terrain here is made from cardboard.
