Any thoughts on the best way to test a color scheme of 4-6 colors for a swamp/stone encounter. Any particular combos that seem to have worked for any past swamp encounters?

I am not quite sure what you are asking but I would stick to greens and browns for the most part. A base dark shade with a lighter highlight shade. Are you trying to make a swamp tile or more like scenery?

Definitely use a variety of greens if you want a 'living' swamp or browns if you want a muddy / dying type swamp

Swamp tile. I have several different surfaces. I would like each to stand out on its own with out taking away from looking and feeling "swampy." I have a long narrow tile that is bordered by tall, sharp rocks...almost mountainous or like a canyon...but in a swamp setting. And the trail through this "pass" is an archipelago of spongy mossy earth. Then here and there, rocky outcroppings rise above the spongy earth. Lastly, surrounding all of the spongy and rocky is the swamp water itself...I want murky but not necessarily colorless. I don't think I want black or grey for that. I will attempt "swamp gas" bubbles like DM Scotty did in that one video. I don't know if certain colors work better for that or not
Do you guys normally try to do some type of "test" with colors to see what works?

Markd1733, I quite often build something as a test and then decide if I want to use that idea or not. I try to do smaller portions than final builds in case I end up not liking what I created and throwing it away. For the swamp water that you're talking about, you might want to use a dark brown, with maybe some dark green highlights anywhere the water would be deep, like in the center of a water area, then toward the edges, blend to a medium to light green so you get a transition and the appearance of the water getting shallower toward the edges.
I've seen the same things done with people making rivers and lakes, dark blue to black at the middle, then slowing lightening to a light blue toward the edge, blending in the transitions so they tend to be smooth!

Thanks to the previous posts. Here is a picture of the swamp being built with the 2.5 method. I am adding the toilet paper paper mache to the mossy trail archipelago. The stacked features are stones jutting out from the swamp, and the green of course is the initial painting of swamp water. I am going to cut straight into the edges and fold them up to make the standing rocks that form the pass. Does it look like I am on the right path to making this look and feel swampy? Any further suggestions? swamp shaping up

Looks like you're off to a great start! That tile is huge and looks like it has a lot of variety in terms of terrain/elevation. You might consider adding some kind of trees, or tree trunks. It might be cool to make one out of wire with really exposed roots that creatures and PCs could hide under. Anyway, really nice design, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. Yeah, so there are 3 cave entrances along this swampy pass. Lurking inside will be a reptilian chimera--croc, viper, and either a mist dragon or a black dragon. Although this is a craft forum, anyone think I should pursue one dragon head over the other for this creature--which I intend to eventually scuplt :-)
