This is a simple feeding well I created for an encounter. The pc's enter a room with 6 sealed flesh doors. Veins from each door run to the well in the center of the room. After some searching and discussing, they learn that the doors must be fed to open them. 1 door allows them to pass, 2 doors lead to treasure (1 good, 1 mediocre), 1 door leads to a bone pit, in which skeletons will reanimate upon entry, 1 door leads to a hallway that dead ends with a trap, and the last door leads to the heart of the creature who controls the doors.
The pc's must step into the well and sacrifice 1/4 of their HP to open the door of their choice. If they open the door with the heart, they can choose to battle it, and if they kill it all doors will open. The trick of this room is that their is a pretty tough encounter coming up. They don't know this of course, but it's totally up to them if they want to spend HP/Healing surges to open all the doors in the hope of treasure, or if they want to move on as soon as possible and bypass it. Here is some pics of the well, The space in the center is just large enough to accommodate a base.
I made this for things from my junk drawer. I found a bunch of glass, stone, and metallic looking stone things. I think they might have been things you put at the bottom of a fish tank. (Hell knows how I got them, never owned a fish.) Anyway just traced the size of a base onto card stock, then placed a stone and traced the total circumference, cut it out and glued the stones in a moon shape pattern. I added veins and textures with the hot glue gun. I painted with thinned out red so that the clear stones would still be translucent. The card stock base is black and red stone texture. (The room was a gory mess)
