These are some active tiles I made for a D&D encounter I designed. The story was. A group of Necromancer's had been kidnapping villagers and travelers from nearby towns. The pc's get told that the necromancers are working out of an old Dwarven mine, located near a dead volcano. The underground Dwarven city was called The Obsidian Sanctum. (The encounter name) The adventurer's discover that the necromancer's have been sacrificing people in a new way to help preserve their corpses (a kind of living magical embalming), giving the necromancer's the best raw material to work with.
Unbeknownst to the Necromancer's and pc's alike. this new form of dark magic has been causing all the spirits of the dead to become trapped within the Sanctum. Towards the end of the encounter when the pc's and necromancer leader's square off, the spirits become violent, and attempt to manifest into the living world. These spirits (called Living Obsidian) begin to emerge from the floors. This is both dangerous to the pc's and enemies alike. All the Living Obsidian posses Burst 1 grabbed. So if anyone or anything strays too close they become grabbed making it easier for their enemies to attack. The living obsidian can be damaged or destroyed, but will immediately respawn in a new area of the tile. They cannot move unless destroyed.
Once all the necromancer's are killed and the sacrificial alter are destroyed the spirits will leave. I also had a spare npc mini on hand to represent one of the spirits who out of gratitude would reveal where the necromancer's stored their riches. Ok so here are some pic. I added a gloss layer to them to look like obsidian, but sadly it obscures some of the photo detail due to the reflection.
These were quite easy to make. I simply bought a large bag of cheap knock off barbies from a thrift store. I got 17 for 6 bucks. I cut off their faces right around the hair line, and then removed their forearms. I used hot glue and card stock, to glue them, then used hot glue to build up the edges so they would blend in with the tile. I painted it a purple black mix. Then highlighted with some soft purples and blues, before adding a little bit of earth colors to look like dirt trapped in the cracks of the stone.
