Flip the trap on it's head. Failing is good, avoiding is worse.
Trigger: Mechanical or magical Description: It's a separating trap of whatever kind you need, place it wherever you want, with whatever description that fits. Effect: Failing to avoid the trap puts you in the safer place. The people on the outside now need to deal with the actual hazard. A swarm of zombies, crushing walls, or whatever much more horrible thing you want to kill them with.
Feedback!
(I know this is not very descriptive, just a nice thing I like to do from time to time, where the players could pick the lesser of two evils or charge headlong into the darkness.)

So would the trick be to make them think it is a trap intended to hurt them, and then put them in a position where they feel they have no other options but to go through it?

The trick is: Getting into the trap is safe.
fall in a pit, and the dragon breath can't hit you.
Option 1: Disable the "trap" You disable the trap in the center of a long hallway. A giant fire-breathing chicken rounds the corner and unleashes flaming breath all over the party. The group flees from the hell-chicken.
Option 2: The party cleric falls into the trap The party cleric ignores the advice of the rogue and falls headfirst into a 20ft pit full of lollipops. He takes his damage and the party laughs at his misfortune. Just then, an angry hell-chicken rounds the corner spewing lethal fire into the hallway. The rest of the party flees for their life, while the cleric enjoys a newly-obtained sugary confection. (Candy in a trap is always the most delicious.) The party fends off the hell-chicken, and the cleric tosses the stick from his lollipop at their scorched feet before administering healing.
Fail = better.
