Wow, 4e combat seems very complicated and time consuming. I cant even imagine what it is like with measuring movement on top of that.

Looks great, maybe could use a little more highlighting on the rubble piles to make them pop out. Just a light drybrushing of light grey or light brown would make a huge difference.

I think that the hallways look great. I do have some constructive criticism however. If I were you I would do the floor in the big room more like the halls. And then add the blood features on top of that. The big room (maybe it is just the picture) to me is way less interesting. It looks as if they were done by different people using different techniques. Even if you just sponged on some grey paint over the entire floor it would add some interest and give the illusion of texture. And do the walls of the big room just like you did for the hallways. Hope this helps. Thanks for posting.

Just a note on the fish bait boxes. I went to walmart to pick up some of those, i found some in the fishing section that I thought would be perfect and threw them in my cart. They were $7 a piece. I then went to the arts and crafts section to get some glue sticks and found the exact same box with a different logo for $5 a piece. So check there and save some cash.

What is the difference between craft paint and that expensive miniature paint?

I would just use some string/twine. Use 2 pieces with your boards glued on top to make the platform of the bridge. Then you could use toothpicks or skewers for two sets of poles set into the ground on both ends of the bridge for the hand ropes, you could glue short pieces of string connecting the hand ropes to the platform part, maybe in V shapes on both sides. I see it in my head but it is kind of hard to put into words lol.

"I suggest making one out of cardboard first and use those pieces as templates for a wooden one." Hey DMBrad, good suggestion! :-) In Brazil we have a thick cardboard, very heavy called Parana(not sure what the english name) might work without wood! Liked it! I'll try to make one and post the photos. You can definitely use thick cardboard, the only reason I made the wood ones is because I had the material and the tools to do it.

I have been wanting to get some dice towers for my group lately but all of the ones I could find were kinda pricey. So I decided to make one out of cardboard to see how it would work. Here is my prototype that I tore one of the sides off of to show you guys what it looks like on the inside. As you can see it is a simple construction, just made with hot glue and cardboard. It is also quite sturdy, in fact, it held together so well I decided that I could do the same thing with some thin plywood that I had. No nails or clamps needed. I made 3 of them. I painted them all with black and texture paint, then sponged on the other colors. Purple, green and blue. I also used a piece of a rubber place mat that I cut to fit and line the bottom. This keeps the dice from wanting to bounce out, which they did occasionally with out the matting. They work great and were super cheap, especially if you just use the cardboard. I suggest making one out of cardboard first and use those pieces as templates for a wooden one. Thanks for looking! DMBrad

More active? Can you imagine 500 posts a day, 500 posts on every thread.. MADNESS!! We seem to have a small, regular crew of active posters, a smattering of folks who drop by to post, and a small army of lurkers.. sounds like a decent message forum to me. Whoa don't get me wrong. This forum is awesome, I check it several times a day. I would just like to see some more people posting and commenting. I am sure we have some lurkers out there that could give some great advice and contribute excellent works.

After reading these posts, I think I would have to say consistency. Use whichever rules or methods or style you feel most comfortable with, but stay consistent. I think this becomes even more important the more rules you remove. If you toss out rules and do not remain consistent in you judgements then it seems you are just making arbitrary judgements which may cause dissent. I, for one, could not play dmbrad's way (no disrespect . For me, that makes it less a game and more an exercise in improvisation. If that is you thing, have fun. I and my group find joy when something fails because it is just 3 inches short. Having gone gridless intensifies this as I have incorporated the say first measure second rule. I also have to disagree with dmscotty. I think gridless can allow for greater precision since you are not bound tothe squares. RPGs may not be wargames, but that is where the foundation lays. I will allow any character to try anything and adjust DC or target numbers accordingly, but this is not an aspect of gridded or not gridded. And that is really my point, do what works for you and your group. If there are rules that you do not like, get rid of them. I want my game to be more of a role playing game than a board game.

In my game, we do not measure anything, there are no templates. My players simply ask me "Can I shoot/move this far?, How many creatures will this spell hit? Can I do this?" I then tell them if they can or cannot do it. I grew up playing dnd with no play maps/tiles and no minis. So it is very easy for me to ignore these "rules". The reason I use tiles and minis now is just to help bring the story to life, that is the important thing. If one of my players comes up with a brilliant idea I will never say "I am sorry, you could have done that if you were 3 inches closer" This of course works both ways, meaning monsters do not have to be precise either.

do you HAVE to balance them over each other? why not just have them side by side?
