I'll be trying to finish up another section of cliffs for a Monday Pathfinder session. PC's are finally entering Schloss Caromarc from the Carrion Crown AP and I need lots of cliffs and bridges...

I really like the attention you gave to the water -- different shades of blue, white caps of foam -- really nice...

Great work! I especially like the canyon facade you made -- a nice little 3D element that sets the scene perfectly...

I'd like to at least see a little of the players. Focusing on the "action" with the tiles is fine, but roleplaying is also about the players and their reactions and interactions. Plus, I'm just a naturally nosey person and like to put faces with voices -- like who's got that fantastic southern drawl... :-)

I'll second the scoring advice. You want to take your time and score a line with almost anything you're cutting -- styrene, foamcore, cardstock, cardboard, etc. Taking two or three passes, increasing the pressure each time, will save you a lot of headaches...

Very nice bookshelves! I've been experimenting with various air dry clays (Paper Clay, Das, etc.). How does the Crayola clay work for you?
For a privy, I'd line a small room with benches, with circular holes cut out. That's about as fancy as they got back then...

Yeah, for dedicated mini painting, stick with the miniature paints. I use craft paint for terrain because it's cheap, has plenty of color choices, and comes in larger containers. I do use some miniature paint for my terrain (washes and metallics, detail work), but only because I have a lot of it and I don't paint many minis anymore...

Thanks Justsix! Your list is very complete and well done! Thanks! I can't take credit for it, that's the work of Steve "the kamloopian," another pioneer in terrain making...

Let me get this straight Justsix! You sealed the model with this coquitel? Then applied the paint? Yes. The goop will have a paint-like consistency. You just paint it on the bare styrofoam. After a couple of coats, it seals the foam and adds some strength. Once it's dry, you can use any type of paint or spray paint you like. Here's the recipe I used.

Does anyone have any suggestions on creating a rope bridge? I'm looking for something with a real rickety, Indiana Jones feel to it. I'm pretty sure I'll be hacking apart coffee stirrers for the boards, but I'm not sure how I should go about adding the rope for the hand rails. Any ideas?

Glad they enjoyed it. it really is a breath of fresh air from the restrictive grid. I find that players are more creative also. My players had absolutely no problem with going gridless. I just passed out the measuring sticks and they went right along with it. It's much less headache, not having to worry about burst templates and how many squares it costs to move diagonally. A couple of my players have a lot of disposable income, and they've accumulated a ton of Dwarven Forge. So they've got everything inside or underground covered, and we use gridded movement for that. I wanted to make 3D terrain for outside encounters, to complement the Dwarven Forge tiles, and agonized over how I was going to put a grid on a swamp, or a forest floor -- until I saw your vids and said "screw it, let's do it gridless." It's been great so far...

Just make sure you stay away from any spray paint until you've sealed the foam with something else -- craft paint, latex house paint, whatever. For large terrain pieces, I seal the foam with goop first. It's a home brewed mix of acrylic caulk, PVA glue, water, plaster dust, and black paint. It seals and strengthens the foam nicely...

That definitely looks good. If you have leftover bits of skeletons, items, or body parts, they would look nice floating around in there. (glued directly to the dice container. Definitely! Especially if you're going to add the light source. Then you'll have these hazy, skeletal shadows floating around inside the cube. Too cool...

If you're looking for some dramatic elevation, you could try adding some columns to the bases of the raised tiles. You could use toilet paper/paper towel rolls (covered with DM Scotty's glue-soaked TP method), or carved foam columns. Give them a rocky texture and paint job so they fit with the theme. Maybe cut the rolls in half for the "middle level," and then use full sized rolls for the "upper level." Just place the tiles next to each other and have your rope ladders dangling down...

I can't access YouTube here at work, so I'm not sure if this is the same person, but check out this LINK. She's also got a YouTube channel, although not with a lot of vids yet. She's got a lot of great, cost-saving ideas about flocking and basing. Thanks to her ideas, I've been adding dried spices and coffee grounds to my various flocks, with great results...

I've been combing the dungeons of YouTube lately for info on various terrain making techniques (which is how I came across your excellent vids), and believe me, you are far from long-winded! I think your vids are well edited, and just long enough to feel like they've got some meat on their bones.
I can't tell you how many 2 minute vids I've come across that are just "look at what I made!" That's great and all, but I would like to know HOW. So I definitely think your vids are some of the most informative, while still having a personal touch...
