Here is an example of how I handle mounted combat. These are various Games Workshop horses that I have moved forward on the base to make room for the player mini. When a player mounts the horse we simply put the PC on the horse mini base...simple as that. Attachments:

I got a tube of toy horses from Michael's that are near-perfectly to 28mm scale, and make bases like these from cardboard.

Mage knight horse figs might fit the bill.

I don't see those on ebay for much less than D&D figs honestly.. I went and checked it out.. Maybe I just need to look harder! I was looking for mage knight stuff when I found those skeletons.

I love this idea. I have been using the "set the mini next to the horse" for a while, but this is clean and easy to do. Great idea.

At $5 each that is not cheap either. I went ahead and ordered one to try it out. I will take pictures and let you guys see it once it arrives. Daniel

One of the guys from our group has 5 of the Litko horses. He'd have more but Litko only had 5 when he ordered them.

Yeah, they're not particularly cheap, but they're pretty cool. Looking forward to your report!

Yeah they are naked tho, I'd like to get some the same size with barding. *cheaply* toilet paper barding, with the right paint job?

I went ahead and ordered one to try it out. I will take pictures and let you guys see it once it arrive. Ok, I received my horse from Litko. I will not be buying any more. The horse looked more like a large dog next to the minis and the flat hose looked odd. So I will be following DMScotty's lead and mounting some horses on bike stands with space for the mini to stand on the base as well.

Yeah they are naked tho, I'd like to get some the same size with barding. Using the cheap horses from Micheal's if a great idea. As for barding, why not make it? Take cardstock, cut it into a saddle shape, soak it in water, drape it over the horse mini and let dry. Then, paint the now shaped saddle to look like leather and glue it to the horse. Depending on the style of saddle you want you could also add cardstock stirrups, a horn, etc. some wet paper towel underneath could be a horse blanket, folded and rolled wet paper towel could be saddlebags, and so on.
