Very good idea, but I think I'd use the glued toilet paper method that dm scotty has posted in the past. I don't like the painting problems that masking tape give you! Just personal preference though!

While I'm not sold on using this idea for trees, I think it would kick butt for making mesa style rock outcroppings. Also, your first two pics gave me a different idea for how to make trees that I'm going to experiment with... Thanks for posting!

Looks quite good.
Btw, how did you make the shrubs?

Those were in one of Scotty's vids. It's a snipping of aquarium plant.

Good idea!!! If you don't have foam, it's probably a good way to create rocks.
Thanks for sharing.

This is a great design for having a hollow to emerge from, or a dryad melding in and out, or a hidden entrance to an underground lair (like in Princess Bride).

If you have flour and water. Or glue and water. Or paper mache' glue you can use stips of paper, cloth toilet paper (thank you DM Scotty)

DM Scotty is my latest hero because I also am cheap. Foam can be sourced cheaply though not as abundantly as cardboard. Lots of things get packaged with styro foam that can be used for many things. Also when the next bulk garbage day hits your neighborhood you can salvage. Once a month my neighborhood throws out furniture and large items that cannot go in the normal can. Lots of chairs and couches have foam in them.
Be careful what glue you use on foam some glue eats it.
