So the excellent thread on Share Pictures of your workspace revealed that a few of you have invested heavily in paints and paint sets. I thought it might be useful for a discussion on the pros and cons of various paint brands people have found useful for painting: figures (metal versus plastic) cardboard wood plastic sheet foam etc.

To start the conversation-
One thing I found to be very useful is to go to the big box hardware store and pick a color sample that you want and you can buy a sample jar for ~ $3 and it is 7.25 oz. There are hundreds of colors they can match so you can get exactly the color you want. This is compared to the Craftsmart acrylic you pay ~$1 for 2 oz bottle at the hobby stores or Walmarts.
Buy the basic blacks or dark grays, colors you use a lot, in the sample jars to save money.

I'm now actually working my way through the buying entire Citadel paint range, I now have around 20 paints.

So what paints do people prefer for painting figures?

Personally I prefer the Citadel paints, yes they are a little expensive (£2.30 per pot) but at least you know that they are proper model paints and you're not guessing whether that "cheaper paint" will do a good job.

I'd have to say the Citadels are my preferred, as well. I like working with Reaper paints, but I'm really bad about estimating how much I need and prefer just working straight from a pot rather than having to squeeze out another six drops four times in a row, not to mention unclogging the tips.

Citadels are fine I don't know anything about the new ones I still have bottels from 1997 that are still good. I do like reaper paints and I personaly do like the droper bottle. P3 also makes good paint and I use the vallejo Game Colors also. The Vallejo are great paint IMO the Vallejo Model is better from what I have been told BUT it does not hold up as well for table top play as the Game colors.

I like the newer Citadel pots as they have a small inner part where you can get your paint from without dipping your brush into the entire pot. Attachments:

I just use normal acrylic paints, but I've only tried them with plastic orcs/dwarves that are ~15p each in bulk. I will be using them with some metal figures soon though, and if they don't work well I think I'll get some proper ones.

I have heard the new paints from Citadel do not last liek the old ones do. They harden up is what I was told. Those who use them, have you seen a difference between the old and new formula?

My new pots are about a year old, and I haven't noticed any issues. If anything, I'd expect them to last longer with the improved lid.
