Reading the MSDS, it sounds like Model Magic is an organic polymer like PlayDoh - density of about half a gram per milliliter, and decomposition products of carbon oxides. So definitely not clay-based.

Kenn, do you care to sacrifice a small amount, and see if it dissolves in hot water? Also, try soda, warming a small amount to see if it browns, and spit on a small piece and smear it around and see if it becomes runnier than it does with a similar amount of water.

The stones of that well remind me of DM Scotty's cairn. GM Kenn's results are excellent.

I will conduct those experiments today if I get a chance and report back the results. About warming it not sure if you mean in the soda or not. Also, if you mean carbonated water (sodo) I only have club type soda since I don't drink pop... will that do or were you thinking about the acidic chemicals in something like Coke? As an FYI, I have warmed the stuff in the oven at lowest setting when I was trying to get the Well to dry more quickly and it did not brown at low temps. Although it specifically says DO NOT put in oven or microwave...

Yeah, I was thinking about soda pop, because it's an easy source of phosphoric acid. Orange juice would work, too, the pH is almost as low.
What's the lowest temp on your oven? 250 F?

The oven was at 150. Also, I had the door to it cracked. I'll try to grab a can of soda here at work before I head home. Hopefully, I'll have more time this evening than I had last eve.

I'm so going to try that home made air dry clay recipe, thanks for sharing it! Lots of air dry 'clay' that you can buy is actually a form of paper mash with a solvent added, so quality and the level of detail you can get will vary a lot from product to product.

Just out of interest, can you raise/lower a bucket with the well?
