I'm preparing an outdoor ambush encounter in a valley along a road and choose to do it as tiles. The encounter takes place in a northern country in early spring and I wanted some remaining snow. I used DM Scottys wet towel technique to create snow piles north of boulders, and painted them with snow effect paint I found on sale after Christmas. I choose not to use blue wash since that looked more like ice when I tried it. Perhaps I should have used some grey shading to create more interesting snow piles. For the road I added some varnish in the tracks to simulate mud. The moss on the stones are some extra white glue + sand followed by green dry brushing and came out quite nicely I think. If the characters captures and interrogates one of the monsters or notice the clues on the tile, they discover a cave to the east. Further investigation can even reveal a back entrance. Now I just need to figure out who the ambushers are and what can be found in the cave

I love how they interlock! and the tiles look great...BRAVO! How anyone could prefer a flat gridded play mat over this kind of set up is beyond me.

Beautiful tiles....was that originally a large piece of cardboard that you cut up or did you create interlocking tiles from different pieces of cardboard?

Great looking tiles. Really like the interlock. It makes it cool to put down one tile at a time!

I like the old fire pit in front of cave enterance as well! Very nice touch and depending on how old the fire is it can give the PCs some clues...wink

Beautiful tiles....was that originally a large piece of cardboard that you cut up or did you create interlocking tiles from different pieces of cardboard? I used two pieces of cardboard, but it was easy to lay the first tile on top of the second cardboard and trace the contour. I wanted tiles with curved edges to fit the style of other outdoor props in case I want to lay them out on brown cloth to create a larger outdoor area, but turned out they also interlocked better.
