My first crafting project is an outdoor area with some snow left. I tested to make some trees without leaves, and the technique turned out to better than expected. Here is how I did it.
Wire frame trunk
I used 0.6 mm metal wire to make the tree trunk frame. New branches can be added by bending a new piece of wire in half and fasten it were you want the branch to start. Make sure miniatures can stand below the lowest branches for easier play.
Glue gun fill out
Use the glue gun to make tree shape trunks and branches.
If you make a solitary tree you can fasten the "roots" to a base first for easier handling. I waited with fastening the trees to the base because I wanted to make a double tree and it would be difficult to work with the glue gun with the trunks so close together.
Adding texture
I sifted some construction sand to get only the finer grains. Hint: Save the larger grains separetely in case you need them for another project.
Paint white glue on the trunk and branches and pour the sifted grains over the glue to get texture.
I guess using dirt texture effect spray could also work, but I didn't have that. Anyway I think the white glue and sand gave a very nice tree-like texture.
I also brushed the base with white glue and added non-sifted construction sand.
Coating
Paint the tree with black spray, then paint everything with dark brown.
Highlight
Drybrush the tree with greenish grey. Finish of by drybrushing some white or light grey to simulate lichen.
I drybrushed the base with light brown, and some light grey on the larger stones.
Done
This was easier than I thought. I'm a beginner on painting, so for instance highlighting take a long time for me. Total active time for making another tree is still only about 30 minutes.
I think I should have darkened the grey with more green/brown to make the trunk more realistic.
I haven't decied if I am going to add snow texture to the branches or leave them as they are. Lore wise the encounter take place in early spring and the snow has started to melt so trees wouldn't normally have snow on them, but perhaps it will look cool
It should be fairly easy to make a good-looking treant in a similar way using metal wire, glue gun and white glue/silted sand.
I have never tried to add foliage to a tree, perhaps you need more end-branches for that to work? I think these trees would look even better with foliage, so if I don't add snow I will try to add foliage after the encounter.
