I have been toying with the idea of building an arena. I could make it out of foam or cardboard but if I use foam I do not want the walls to be very tall. Has anyone else made one or have any ideas? I don't want it to be just a big circle with walls/seats around the outside.

Build stadium-style seating. Two layers of cardboard under each row of chairs. Something that is obviously elevation while not getting in the way.

So to make sure I understand this correctly, you don't want a flat arena with rings of seating around it. You also don't want it to be too tall. I think I would start with an oval shape for the arena floor. You may want to flatten the ends of the oval. Next I'd take a strip of card about 1" wide and long enough to frame the arena sides. Youc ould embellish this with dowelling for columns between lengths of card, and add portcullis like gates at either end.
If you cut out your arena floor with enough space around it you can use the remaining card as a base for the seating. I would add extra rows as strips of card, and maybe even do a small section with an enclosed private box for the high and mighty watching the games.. You could aslo build supports about 1/2" thick to raise the seeting and give it a bit more elevation.

I didn't bother with any kind of wall or seating, it just gets in the way of play and is wasted space and effort since nobody turns up with any spectator miniatures anyway. Details of the construction and why I made it the way i did are here: www.matakishi.com/gladiatorialarena.htm

To completely remove exterior terrain why not go for a Hilltop/Mountaintop/Building top ... that way you just need ground edging and some in game reason why they cant get down until its over.... that would be my idea anywho. i like the posted tutorial, they layout reminds me of the World Martial Arts Tournaments from DragonBall Z xD
