I love the look of the armor plating, but the 2e Worm does not sport armor anywhere. Instead, it has a relatively low AC of 6... It is just a leather-skinned worm. The 2e image shows two eyes, as well, but that really doesn't make sense to me: worms should not have a 'back', and a 'belly', nor should they have 'eyes', IMO. Mine will be a bit different from what DM Scotty and the rest of you are doing, I imagine. The vacuum hose would be quite useful for me, as I plan on making semi-concentric rings, around its whole body length, which is what it appears to have, in the official image, and the ribs on the hose would lend a tremendous hand in forming those rings! Alas, I will work studiously with my Hot Glue Gun to form the rings, manually -- I don't have a spare hose, either. I did a quick google search to find the official 2e picture and instead came up with some other wormy artwork: 1) www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/44876-02521-cavern-worm/Looks more like a the comic version of the majestic purple worm, but I like in nontheless. Even though I'd rather use it either in a light-hearted campaign or as a creature of madness (nightmare- or dreamworld, plane of faeries, etc.) 2) www.flickr.com/photos/35936528@N06/3373301354/I guess this is the official PW mini as seen from above, but it gave me an evil idea: Craft a vertical terrain piece like a large cave wall and then craft a duplicate with the PW bursting out! 3) www.lead-adventure.de/index.php?topic=10853.0The same model, unassembled: www.matakishi.com/paintingspugs.htmThis one looks like sgtslag described: no 'back' & 'bell'y sides, instead concentric rings. I think it can even be re-created by us: Use something for the rings or better: make your own rings from a aluminum foil strenghtened by hotglue, perhaps with a 'wire sceleton' in the center of each ring for additional strenght, then use paper maché or some other material to link the rings. Sounds easy! My crafting fingers are already itching... 4a) www.thiel-a-vision.com/images/games/dnd/dndpurpleworm.jpgI guess that is from 1st edition... 4b) i4.tinypic.com/10r8hmt.jpgArtwork of the Purple Worm facing off against a party of three (fighter, magic-user, cleric) by David C. Goodwill or thrift store for vacuum hose or similar hose. Got some there last year for a costume.

The model featured in #3 is straight out of the 2e MM artwork. Seeing it built, and painted, makes the idea of 'eyes' more understandable, but I still don't think it is 'realistic' for a worm to have eyes... That is a very nice model of the 2e version, though I think it is only around 15 scale feet in length. The 2e MM gives conflicting listings for size: in the stats block, it says that it is only 15 feet long, but in the description paragraphs, it says that there are numerous, reliable sources stating they can be up to 25 feet long, for adult Worms; the same paragraph of text states that they are 8-9 feet in diameter, as well. Thanks for sharing the information. Entry #3 really helps, as it seems closest to the 2e version I would like to build.
Never thought of the local Goodwill Store for the hose. Thanks!

Here is my make of the worm. Nothing original here for this make. I even attempted to get the coloring close to what Scott made because I thought it looked good. At some point I plan on putting a satin finish varnish to seal it and keep it safe. I'm completely happy with the belly though and might try to add some color to it. I might let the others at the table decide. I made the base larger to help offset the weight of the worm. I glued several Popsicle sticks to the bottom but it still warped a little. Either way, here it is... Purple Worm vs. Orc Warrior

Worm progress. I really wanted to get the feel of movement so I cut my segments down to a third the size and was able to get a really nice serpentine affect. While I was gluing the pieces together, an old dice box sat there taunting me. Viola! Gelatinous Cube! Suck it Reaper! Mine is better. Thanks TheBrave for sparking the trend. belatucadrasI love the way you did the segmentation - looks realistic AND easy to craft. Hats off - another way to do worms! ...and that cube looks loverly too. One can never have enough worms, cubes and tentacles. (old DM wisdom)

While Reaper's Bones II Kickstarter project hits it's final 3 days, there's a new extra stretch goal: Mashaaf the Great Old One. It's not exactly a Purple Worm, but the posture, the ridged belly section and especially the maw reminds me on our most beloved miniamacroture. A little time ago I wouldn't have dreamed about being able to create something like that myself. But after a few months of being here, I find myself picking out the details of this beast and recognising that I know how to build much of it myself: - General structure of a large, wormy body? Scotty's Purple Worm. - The posture? Like the Purple Worm. - The maw? Purple Worm . - Ridged Belly? You guessed it: Purple Worm. - Tentacles on the Maw? I know how to build tentacles, thank you. - Little deco stalacmites on the base? Shouldn't be too hard. - Fleshy folds? C'mon... - Rocks embedded in the carapace? Are you kidding me? That is Crafter's 101. - Pustules on the skin? Yawn. Simply press the Hotglue gun tip in the glue. - Crater-like pustules? I don't know exactly how, but I have some ideas... - Bones and scythe for the upper 'antennae'? Not sure, but I'm confident I find a solution in the board here. And that's what I love on these boards: So much learned in such a fast pace! I don't think I will sculpt it very soon (I still have a largely unfinished Purple Worm waiting on my desk!), but I now have the confidence to dare such a project. I think I will spent the extra 12 $ on this beast, just to be able to examine it with my own eyes and learn from close up. I think that way I'm learning even maw more than from the pictures.

Green Eye Games is making one as well for Cthulhu Wars. It's called the Bhole and is part of their Dreamlands map expansion that'll cost at the very least 50$

Reaper also has a couple other versions besides the one you linked above: Bones version of the above. not a bad price at $3 US but not as cool as DMScottys... And the "full" pewter with it's tail:

Update on my attempt at a giant worm. s1298.photobucket.com/user/Belatucadras/story/93875Story behind this guy is that he is part worm and part steampunk machine. It mines the ore then machines built into the creature smelt it into a usable material. The story arc I am working on pits the characters against a mad scientist that is creating these cyborg creatures and he needs more material. This particular nasty was created to break into mines and get to the ore before the legitimate miners. It uses the base creature's natural abilities by milking the worm's saliva then spraying the solvent/acid onto the rock. It then grinds the rock/ore before sucking it into the on board smelter. The flanges around the mechanical mouth opening are vents leading from the radiators that dissipate the heat generated from the friction. The opening in the back will have a grating over it and serves as access to the coolant lines. My time has been sporadic at best. Hopefully I can get to it this weekend.

I love the way you textured the 'skin' on the worm, layering the cardboard wraps. It looks fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

That steampunk worm is badass. Love the mechanical mouthpiece & little open air wiring on the back. The different kind of back scales you used for the carapace are cool too.

Wow, that mechanical worm is perfect! What did you use for the texture on its back? It looks great!

Thanks for the kudos. The texture on te back is bark from a tree. I was in a truck scale and a logging truck was parked next to me and I grabbed a few loose bits, broke them up and hot glued them in place.
Next will be the mechanical spider chariot using a dollar store tarantula and a small airship using 2 liter soda bottles.

Oooh, that tree bark looks awesome. I'll need to try and fit bark into something someday.
