Hi this is my first post. I hope I get it right.
So here is the situation. Our DM is running Pyramid of Shadows Orcus conversion and after a few session running around the town we were ready to take the plunge into the pyramid (Spoilers may follow)
Teleport in Dm draws on the room and places the monsters. We don't have a very large variety of miniatures, we can fill a table with orcs and humaniods butthe more exotic mini's we just dont have so stand ins were founds. this is what we ended up with.
So to stand in for an Etten we have a Stone Giant, not to far a stretch. But to stand in for 2 carrion crawlers the only mini's we had with 4 square bases were Warhammer Epic 40k Warhound Titans which I had painted baby blue and pink in the early 90's. We fought a round with these before wrappin up for the week.
I decided I just could not fight these in there current guise. So the hunt was on for alternatives. Needed to be cheap and in my hands within a week. Ebay was a bust as they were either too expensive or the WOTC plastic ones which IMO are more comical than fighting the warhounds.
With 3 days left before game night I had still not come up with a solution to the problem. I have greenstuff but making 2 crawlers would use it all up. Then I get told that I'm gonna be baby sitting my niece and nephew for the day. Have to keep them busy. My solution to both problems came to me from my cub scout days. I'll make up a batch of Salt Dough.
I hit youtube and got a refresher course in salt dough. Got everything together and put the kids to work (ages 6 and 10) making a batch of dough. I nicked what I required and let them at it for a few hours (result)
After drying in the oven I ended up with 2 of these.
Firstly my sculpting was done with 1 eye on the terrible twosome so they looked a bit rough. Not a problem they were going to be added to and painted. Secondly I can not believe how hard this substance became after cooking. I had to saw the bottom so it was flat, took me 20 minutes
Now i had to make the worm/maggot more Carrion crawler. Legs, teeth, tenticles and eyes. for these i used cocktail sticks and some old flex wire. I used a pin vice to drill holes for the cocktail stick ends to sit in.
Made a base from some cork tile and some plastic skeleton bits. The jaws and spike are made from 40k Tyrannid bits I had left over.
I had wanted to do more to the crawlers but time had pretty much run out. So I put some paint on.
They went down a storm. They were only on the table for an hour or so but it made that time far more enjoyable than the pink titans would have.
I do not think this will be my last use of salt dough. I am going to be DMing the next module (P1) and have seen already that I will need 2 huge crocodiles, I'll just have more time to do a better job
Thanks for looking. Comments and critique are welcome
